During my Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (SHSC) practicum, I completed two rotations: Outpatient Services at St. John's Rehab and Trauma at SHSC's Bayview Campus.In Outpatient Services, I completed social work screens and psychosocial assessments via telephone and in-person appointments. I worked with stroke and neurological patient populations, providing counselling, recovery education, and linking patients with community resources.In the Tory Trauma Program at the Bayview campus, I worked with patients who had sustained life-threatening and multi-system injuries. I provided crisis intervention, adjustment and grief counselling, and discharge planning to patients and their families using anti-oppressive, biopsychosocial, and family systems-illness frameworks. I completed comprehensive psychosocial assessments and collaborated with allied health and interprofessional team members to ensure quality patient care and safe discharges. Whether patients were in the trauma ward, intensive care, or critical care units, I followed them as they made their way through the trauma care pathway.Both rotations required knowledge of policy and legislation, including the Health Care Consent Act (HCCA), Substitute Decisions Act (SDA), and Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA).

As a Constituency Assistant for the Office of Wayne Gates, Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP), I connect with and advocate for the Niagara Falls, Fort Erie, and Ontario communities. Constituency assistants represent their MPPs within their office, as well as when attending or facilitating events. My primary responsibilities include casework, community outreach, and responding to constituents' inquiries regarding personal, local, and provincial advocacy issues.

I controlled student access within the Daphne Cockwell Health Sciences Complex, ensuring safety by directing students and staff to the appropriate stairwells, overflow rooms, and elevators. I updated and maintained COVID-19 contact tracing attendance lists to uphold standards set in place by the Ontario Provincial Government. I also promoted the use of social distancing measures in the building and executed check-in procedures for the safety and wellbeing of all visitors and residents.

As a recipient of the Undergraduate Research Opportunities (URO) award, I worked alongside Ryerson University's Director of the School of Social Work, Dr. Valerie Borum, on her research project. Dr. Borum's research expands on the scholarly literature about mental health interventions and proposes the necessity of culturally appropriate work attending to and recognizing the communities of persons living with mental health concerns.I worked closely with Dr. Borum in analyzing qualitative data, updating her literature review, conceptualizing terminology, and identifying the implications of this research in the field of social work and policy. The completion of these objectives led to the creation of a manuscript for publication in a peer-reviewed journal. I presented the contents of this research project at the 2021 URO Showcase.Further, Dr. Borum and I have begun a new manuscript that targets the issue of the rising suicide rates in the Black community.
