Profile bio

About Kyle Albert

I develop and lead research projects on the marketplace for credentials and how public polices shape the labor market outcomes associated with higher education and training. My academic background is in the sociology of work and professions, though my expertise includes a wide range of topics including workforce development, unemployment, youth employment, older workers, employers and hiring practices, labor unions, professional associations, data systems and research methods. I believe in the value of collecting qualitative data from practitioners in the field, though I also use quantitative methods to analyze large administrative and survey datasets to identify who benefits from which credentials and training programs. For the last four years I've managed the operations of the Non-Degree Credentials Research Network (NCRN), a one-of-a-kind forum for researchers, educators, employers, policymakers, and other stakeholders to come together to set a new research agenda and identify new sources of data for studying the effectiveness of non-degree credentials such as certifications, occupational licenses, apprenticeships, and other emerging forms of higher education. As of July 2022, the NCRN includes 317 researchers and stakeholders representing nearly all levels of higher education and government and all types of non-degree credentials. While U.S.-based, the NCRN includes many international members and I am actively pursuing opportunities to build international research collaborations on credentials and workforce development.Prior to joining George Washington University, I was a Sloan Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University, where I conducted research on the training and credentialing needs of older workers and the relationship between aging and the quality of working life. In 2016, I completed a doctoral dissertation at Cornell on the reasons for the rapid expansion of professional certification programs in the United States over the past few decades. In addition to my "day job" researching and consulting on topics related to credentials and workforce development, I devote many evenings and weekends to supporting my wife and her family in their food blogging, recipe development and social media enterprise, Unicorns in the Kitchen (www.unicornsinthekitchen.com). Thus, it's probably no surprise that one of my highest priorities for future research is to understand the effect of social media on the career and credential choices of young people entering the labor market...

Sloan Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Greater Boston Area

My fellowship was supported by a grant from the Sloan Foundation to conduct research connected to the theme of aging and work. My primary interests included certification programs, professional membership associations, labor markets, self-employment and continuing/higher education. I analyzed a wide variety of federal labor market and education surveys in addition to conducting original interview and archival research. Much of my research examined how credentials and other forms of occupational engagement create value for workers, and how that value varies as workers age. I also used longitudinal data to study patterns of professional association membership in the United States over the past few decades. In this research, I found that professional associations are simultaneously becoming more diverse in terms of age and increasingly unequal with respect to income.
