About Kyle Baldwin, Phd
Since 2012 I have been working as an experimental soft matter physicist, which has led me to a senior lecturer position in Nottingham. I began my research career at NTU, focusing on the behaviour of evaporating polymer solutions, in particular, working on a solution to the much maligned "coffee-ring effect" which hinders ink-jet printing. In the years that followed my PhD as a post-doctoral researcher, I have stayed within the realm of soft matter physics, exploring: the shapes of spinning drops and tektite formation; inhibition of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability by rotation; vibration induced propulsion; and propulsive "active" emulsions.Beyond research, I am passionate about talking science in and out of the lecture hall. My experience of lecturing began in 2017 in Germany, where I lectured a course in Climate Physics at the Georg-August University, Göttingen. Since January 2019, I have been in a senior lecturer position at Nottingham Trent University, where I have taught modules covering the fundamental forces of nature, and an introduction to programming for physicists via LabVIEW and MATLAB. I have also given numerous public talks (including being invited to present my work at the 2014 Geophysical Union in San Francisco), and have ran/participated in outreach events whenever possible - such as the Pint of Science festival and the 3-Minute Wonder competition. I write science inspired blogs on my website, adropofscience.com, where I also detail my areas of research, and display my droplet photography.I have been drawn to soft matter physics due in part to the bountiful number of unanswered questions in the field, pondering which has sustained my curiosity and enthusiasm. But also it is largely due to the hands-on nature of this field of science; it is a constant source of amazement that with some pumps, liquids, dyes and magnets, one can begin to understand a wide variety of seemingly unrelated physical phenomena, such as tectonic drift, atomic fission, and supernovae, through table top experiments that you can witness with your own eyes.
Listed skills include Physics, Experimental Physics, Fluid Dynamics, Evaporation, and 18 others.

Postdoctoral Researcher
As part of the Maaß group in Active Soft Matter, under Director Stephan Herminghaus, I will be performing experimental research into self-propelled swimming micro-droplets.These droplets, which can be produced in large quantities with uniform attributes, exhibit a striking range of swimming behaviours, controllable through the temperature, liquid crystal.
Postdoctoral Research Fellow
As of 2015, researchers at NTU have stumbled upon a new form of passive, stable magnetic levitation that (unlike most other techniques for levitation) requires nothing more sophisticated than the tools most laboratories possess. My primary goal in this one year position is to solve the mystery of how this levitation technique is stable, and publish our.
Postdoctoral Research Fellow
By using a 17T superconducting magnet capable of levitating various diamagnetic materials, including (but not limited to) water, ethanol, glycerol and parrafin I am able to study several as yet unexplored fields of fluid dynamics, such as:Spin-up and capillary pinch-off of fast rotating Newtonian and viscoelastic fluids.Coalescence of two equally sized.
Phd Student
Unlike the familiar “ring-stain” formed when spilt coffee drops are left to dry, liquids containing high molecular weight polymer molecules leave a range of other deposit pat- terns. In this thesis I observe that aqueous solutions of the polymer PEO dries to form either the common coffee-ring stain, flat uniform “pancakes”, or tall central “pillars”.To.
Spur Summer Programme
The key role of this position was to become an expert of the TaiCaan XYRIS confocal white light Profilometer and use this expertise to perform my own research and help current PhD students with theirs. I used the device to investigate the drying properties of Dextran solution droplets, specifically, the bending and cracking of thin glass slide coverslips.
