Vice President Of Clinical Services
While working collaboratively with the executive team as a senior administrator, I prioritize and direct the implementation of key strategic initiatives within the organization. I oversee 7 directors and am responsible for leading over 500 staff who support Riverside’s clinical services. My fiscal duties include P&L management, multimillion dollar budgetary oversight, cost-control, and forecasting. Throughout my tenure, I have developed and implemented value-added strategies to enhance performance on operational metrics, thus improving quality of care, profitability, and program sustainability. As a strong team is key to success, I also play a role in recruiting and mentoring clinical and non-clinical directors and managers, as well as new physicians. Critical Successes: • Growth and Strategic Partnership Initiatives: I increased market share and pediatric census by designing 24/7 pediatric hospitalist program, implemented in collaboration with University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital. We also partnered with the University of Chicago to staff the cardiothoracic surgery program at Riverside Healthcare. • P&L Management: I oversaw expansion of the value analysis committee, saving over $2.25M in redundant expenditures. • Operations Improvement: By overhauling and reorganizing our emergency department based on a triage model, we were able to handle increased volume, decrease patient wait times, and positively impact throughput.
Director Of Surgical Services
I was promoted to direct perioperative services where I managed a team of 140 nurses, technicians, and non-clinical staff in the surgicenter, post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), 18 operating rooms, and surgical scheduling office. I was also fully accountable for the financial health of this business segment. Though I spent less than a year in this capacity, I was able to make a substantial positive impact by incorporating organizational procedures and information technology (IT) advances to improve operational and financial performance. I also led the expansion of the hospital’s service offerings, leading to gains in treatment efficiency and care outcomes.Critical Successes:• P&L Management: The organization was able to reclaim $3M in supply costs after I formed a department value analysis committee. We also improved our operating margin by 300% via cost reduction and revenue enhancement initiatives.• Operations Improvement: I introduced a surgical scheduling office which decreased the same day cancellation rate by over 50%. Under my leadership, we were also able to achieve the highest hospital patient satisfaction scores in 2013.
Director Of Business Operations - Perioperative Services
While administrating the business aspects of perioperative services at UI Health, I took on the systematic transformation of the way employee relations were managed, resulting in greater staff satisfaction, enhanced productivity and higher retention rates. I also replaced the department’s outdated data management system with cost-effective automated software which led to improvements in efficiency. The scope of my directorial responsibilities include budget oversite, departmental strategic planning, staff supervision, scheduling, physician and vendor relations, market development, and supply management. Critical Successes:• P&L Management: I was able to help save the hospital over $2M by standardizing and renegotiating vendor contracts. • Operations Improvement: We increased utilization by 10% and volume growth by 9% through reorganization of the block schedule. Our employee satisfaction score also improved by 7 points in 1 year and our patient experience score climbed 12 points in 6 months.
Administrative Fellow
Reporting to and advising the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and the Chief Operating Officer (COO), I was tasked with conducting reviews of existing surgical services and ambulatory clinic protocols. My recommendations were targeted at maximizing revenues, reducing expenses, and improving patient access. This role also allowed me to contribute to projects which led directly to enhancements in the patient experience. Critical Successes:• Cost Saving and Operations Improvement: I launched a multifaceted assessment which resulted in the restructuring of UI Health’s surgical scheduling system, maximizing volume, increasing first case start accuracy, and reducing supply costs by $300K. • Efficiency and Program Enhancements: I performed an Orthopedic and Neuroscience clinic patient flow throughput study and made recommendations to streamline operations and reduce patient holdups.
Graduate Assistant, Business Planning And Decision Support
As a graduate assistant, I identified areas for operational growth by conducting an analysis of financial statistics, patient activity, and facility-related historical data. I then executed analytical comparisons based on reports and compiled results. Critical Successes:• Revenue Enrichment: A financial business model for imaging services (PET/CT) I constructed was estimated to attract $5.6M in revenues. I also developed a profitability analysis tool to distinguish lucrative surgical procedures and increase departmental profitability. • Sourcing Optimization: I was able to improve margins on cardiac inpatient and outpatient implant activities without sacrificing outcomes by restructuring our organization’s supplier selection process.
