Under supervision of the Associate Vice President of Water at AECOM, I was tasked with designing a tertiary treatment facility to maintain acceptable influent and effluent waters into the San Joaquin Reservoir in Irvine, California. I sized chemical tanks in accordance with approximate monthly chemical usage and selected an array of filters based on the facility's predicted flow and the reservoir's estimated algae accumulation. Additionally, I designed the layout of the facility with basic essentials for operation and isolated spill areas and sump pumps for the aforementioned chemical storage. Upon completion of the project, I will have created a hydraulic profile and a 3D model in SketchUp of the facility.

I designed a preliminary, primary, and secondary wastewater treatment plant that effectively lowered treated effluent BOD5 levels below US EPA regulations for a given waste influent. I selected screenings and designed grit chambers for preliminary treatment, and designed primary clarifiers for primary treatment. In the secondary treatment, I used an iterative process to simultaneously determine a number of blowers and diffusers needed for the aeration tanks based on a calculated airflow rate. Furthermore, I designed secondary clarifiers to complete the treatment. A portion of the settled solids from the clarifiers were sent to a mesophilic digester to produce energy from biogas. In order to validate the design of the plant, I created a SUMO simulation to dynamically change influent conditions to discern if in a diurnal cycle, the plant continued to meet US EPA regulations.By the end of this project, I hope to have a clear understanding of greenhouse gas emissions from the operation of a wastewater treatment plant. I also plan to use SUMO to dynamically simulate emissions in a diurnal cycle.

I worked on a mock redevelopment proposal for a 26-acre lot in Norwalk, CA. I researched demographics and public desires for the space, and finalized a design of a unique mixed-use space of residential and commercial properties. I rendered a basic 3D model of the complex using Blender. Additionally, I researched Norwalk, CA Municipal Codes, City Engineer Permits, 2019 California Codes, and CEQA guidelines in order to carry on with construction.

With the constant expansion of dense urban areas, the urban heat island effect is becoming a pressing issue. I used public satellite data to map land surface temperatures and calculate a normalized difference vegetation index for the Los Angeles area in QGIS. Cross-referencing the data set, I was able to convey the relationship between the amount of vegetation and temperature in an area.

I joined a group of engineers from different majors in order to design a quadcopter capable of flight and maneuverability through an obstacle course. I modelled 3D parts in SOLIDWORKS and used 3D printing to create parts of the assembly. This project presented a holistic understanding of the engineering pipeline in a real-world situation where progress relies on coherent communication between teams.
