I was lucky enough to be drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 29th round of the 2013 Major League Baseball draft. Two months after graduating from college I signed my contract and embarked on a professional baseball career. Over the past 6 years baseball has allowed me to learn and grow my business acumen. Being a starting pitcher and taking the mound every 5th day is like making a presentation to your coworkers, executives and 10,000 others there for fun. Preparation for each outing involves creating scouting reports (knowing your competitors), collaborating with teammates (effectively communicating orally and written) and working each day with a goal in mind (achieving deadlines). If you don't perform these critical steps the outing/presentation will be seen as a failure. Responding to “failures” is what has allowed to me to learn about myself and what motivates me. Overcoming failure is a daily battle in professional baseball. My first full season as a minor league baseball player I was faced with a decision. I didn't make a team out of spring training and I could have been upset and felt sorry for myself instead I kept my head down and made it my mission to prove I belonged on a team. I ended up leading all of the Padres minor leagues in strikeouts that season as well as the Midwest League. Over the next 5 years I was able to lead the organization in strikeouts twice, throw a 9 inning no hitter in Double A and make my major league debut. I also participated in community outreach events throughout my career. Giving back and building relationships with the communities that supported us each season was as important to me as my baseball activity. I didn't do it for the accolades but I was named the community outreach player of the year in 2015 and 2019.
