I was elected and served as a board member and the secretary for the Gay Coaches Alliance, a professional association of GBTQ+ men who work as coaches, are in allied helping professions, or use coaching as a key component of their work.

I served on the GCA's Programming and Social Committee, which creates and facilitates social and educational programs for the organization's membership. A few highlights from my time on the committee included organizing the events “What Other Businesses Can Teach Us About Business Building in Coaching” and “Learn From Successful Coaches.” I also drove a concerted effort to increase the diversity of speakers to more accurately represent the GCA membership and the clients we serve.

This leadership role had a lot of moving pieces. I was on the ground working with students, while also supporting long-term strategy and campus-wide initiatives, all in the name of student success.In a nutshell, I oversaw the daily operations of 3 apartment complexes that housed 800 students. I orchestrated resident mental health concerns, social events, facility issues, conduct concerns, 3 AM phone calls, and a few fires and floods. I also led a fabulous team of 23 direct reports.One of the most rewarding aspects of the role was coordinating complex case management and one-to-one counseling for a portfolio of 'Students of Concern' (students who had been hospitalized, experienced suicidal ideation and substance use disorder, etc.). I ensured these students received the support they needed to succeed in school and life.Similar to my previous experience with SF State (I also worked at the institution from 2011 to 2014), I used my public speaking skills to design and facilitate workshops, training sessions, and retreats. One of the workshops, “Mental Illness on College Campuses: Moving from Awareness to Recovery,” received a Top 5 Program Award (out of 60+ programs) at Northern RAP 2016.

This was one of the best jobs I ever had. As a Type A, I enjoyed orchestrating the logistics for fundraising and community relations events. As someone living with multiple mental health conditions, I appreciated using my unique skill set to raise funds and critically needed awareness for one of the largest providers of community mental health services in Washington State. And, as a storyteller, I loved writing great copy for the organization's website, newsletters, emails, and other marketing platforms.

I was originally contracted by Thrive, Washington State’s public-private partnership for early learning, to support a complex database conversion and implementation. I was subsequently hired onto the staff to project manage the nonprofit’s fundraising luncheon following a highly visible organizational rebranding. As a result of several leadership changes, I also coordinated individual giving efforts.

By my third year, I was promoted again and co-managed conduct and community development for 2 residence halls.While at SF State (the first time; I was recruited back to the institution in 2016), I successfully developed and implemented more than 80 educational programs, social events, and training sessions. Topics spanned diversity, social justice, community development, conflict resolution, crisis response, mental health, and self-care.One of my most prized accomplishments was the creation of the workshop “That’s So Gay & Other Phrases You Shouldn’t Use,” which received the NRHH Diversity Program of the Month Award at the national level. After formalizing the nonprofit's recruitment processes, I interviewed, onboarded, trained, and mentored several dozen long-term volunteers and interns. In addition to successfully building out and scaling the institution's volunteer programs, I created two comprehensive internship programs. As a result of my efforts, the organization's reach expanded from 4 to 13 states.
