Who knew that failure would result in success?As a homeschooled Midwestern kid, I had no idea what to expect when I walked into my first class of college. School had never been challenging, so when I scored a 48% on my first chemistry exam, I knew I had to adapt. There is something eye-opening about giving your best effort and still failing. Rather than becoming bitter, this changed me. I was determined to work harder and smarter.Failure is what pushed me to succeed. My C+ in the first semester of chemistry pushed me to get straight A’s in organic chemistry. As I adapted to the increasing pressure of Biological-Systems Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, I grew to see the value in entering into challenging projects. I chose difficult electives.I held a summer job that required 84 hours of work a week.I worked multiple hours in a science lab every week throughout nearly every semester.I worked with a team of engineers to design a specific system requested by a client. This required an extensive design process, regular communication with the client, and periodic public reports to the faculty at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I co-wrote an NIH grant proposal for a tissue-engineered small intestinal construct exhibiting peristaltic function. No matter the season of life, I am always looking for my next big challenge.
