One of the first confirmations for my choosing of nursing as a career path came to me 2 weeks into my freshman year of college. I had originally picked nursing in my senior year of high school due to my clear passion for people, and love for science, but this was further confirmed by an experience with hospitalization. I became acutely ill with a kidney infection my first few weeks at college during the height of the COVID-19 mitigation period. This illness left me hospitalized at 18 years old, with no family allowed to visit. The nurses caring for me gave me the family love and care that I was unable to receive while in the hospital. Their selfless love combined with clinical competency is the type of nurse I realized I wanted to be for children. Especially, those without an advocate or caregiver by their bedside. During my time as a nursing student, I was given the opportunity to do clinical rotations on a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. While there, I had the opportunity to care for an infant undergoing Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. Due to circumstances out of his control, this child was left in pain without family by his side. I was able to be there for him, swaddle and hold him, and make sure that all of his clinical, physical, and emotional needs were met. I have always felt called to children, as I started Nannying as early as I could at 13 years old. As I think about who I want to serve, and what area of nursing I will prove to be an important asset to, I am drawn to Pediatrics.
