I am diving into the world of water, taking on all sorts of tasks at Washington Water Trust. WWT is a small non-profit focused on in-stream water conservation. I love what we do, and how we do it. Instead of a top-down, adversarial regulatory approach to improving water flow, WWT builds relationships with organizations and individual landowners, leveraging grant dollars to secure long-term leases and outright purchases of water rights from willing sellers all over the state. WWT also pursues other transaction-based water conservation approaches, such as water banks and exchanges.My role at WWT is varied and evolving. My position will include a good amount of financial management and budgeting, with some opportunities to work in communications and grant-writing as well. Upon proving myself to be easily trained and quick to learn King County's Oracle eBusiness Suite, I was promoted to Fiscal Specialist II, taking over for a coworker who had taken an out-of-class assignment.While at King County, I triaged and processed hundreds of bills, working with vendors, requisitioners, contract managers and others to smooth out any issues I found. I worked with individual students, pairs, small groups and full classrooms. Sometimes I simply talked with students, giving them feedback and tips according to their particular strengths and weaknesses. This promotion occurred about two weeks before getting laid off along with roughly a third of the workforce. Odd, I know. I started as an administrative assistant/paralegal, and after eight months was promoted to a full paralegal, working with the litigation team. D&S is a well-run firm, and full of good folks (I hear that this makes it unique for its sector).
