Kyle Gelderman is a recent graduate of SUNY Maritime, with a BS in Marine Environmental Science with a minor in Marine Biology. He holds an Unlimited Third Mate Deck License and plans to sail in the commercial maritime industry. Kyle was a member of several extracurricular activities on campus as well as a student athlete. Kyle was Fleet Captain of the Varsity Sailing Team. Kyle’s first job was working at the Southold Yacht Club. He started work at the age of fourteen as a concession stand vendor. His sailing experience and excellent interpersonal skills lead to work as a sailing instructor. More specifically, his ability to teach and manage young children in a safe and fun environment led to his consideration as Lead Sailing School Instructor in the summer of 2018. This position required a high degree of responsibility and relied heavily on standards set forth by the US Sailing Association. Daily orders and communication with the directors of the sailing school, managing peer co-workers, teaching lessons to young sailors, preparing the logistics of regattas, as well as communication with parents of the students are just some of the skills practiced while employed at the Southold Yacht Club. In addition, Kyle has experience working in construction. He started as a laborer and gained various carpentry skills from working alongside his father, a union foreman carpenter. As a result, he has attained various carpentry skills from his work. Between semesters, Kyle worked in the warehouse and shop of Certified Interiors Inc. Here he learned warehouse operations, made deliveries and continued to enhance his woodworking and general carpentry skills. Kyle is from Farmingville, New York. He is one of three children. He attended Sachem High School East where he was a member of the National Honor Society and was also a two sport student athlete for all four years. Lacrosse provided many lessons about teamwork and sportsmanship. The life lessons learned on the mat from competing as a wrestler taught him about setting goals, and perseverance, but most important was how to overcome and grow from losses.
