About Kyle Bellucci Johanson
Kyle Bellucci Johanson has worked across educational and arts institutions in St. Paul, Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York for the past thirteen years. Most recently, he taught Critical Studies in the MFA program at New York Academy of Art, and Introduction to Drawing at City University of New York. Previous appointments include the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where Kyle taught in Contemporary Practices, and the University of Illinois Chicago, where he was appointed as an advisor on the graduate committee, and taught courses in Sculpture and Drawing. From 2016-2018, in the Department of Learning and Public Engagement at the Art Institute of Chicago, he managed a program called Thinking Experiences at the Museum (TEAM), in which the Art Institute partnered with twenty Chicago Public Schools 4th and 5th grade classes to help teachers incorporate art into their curriculum and help students develop their critical thinking skills through art. In addition to TEAM, Kyle co-organized Quantum Unlearning, a symposium hosted by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2018 at the intersection of quantum physics, decolonial theory, semiotics, and ontology; and their relation to contemporary art. From 2018-2022 Kyle founded and directed table, a temporary project space in Chicago dedicated to situating artist’s practices through exhibition, discursive meals, and publication. From 2010-2014 he co-facilitated and organized visual arts programming for THE LAB, a district-wide arts and wellness program of St. Paul Public Schools, that served over 1,200 students at ten Junior High and High Schools across the city.As an artist, Kyle works in performance-architecture situating objects, language, and media to visualize and critique power structures and instigate imaginary futures. Recent exhibitions include The Whitney Museum of American Art; Feiertag, Kassel; Chicago Architecture Biennial; Gray Center for Arts and Inquiry, Chicago; Human Resources, Los Angeles; and Centro Cultural Metropolitano, Quito, Ecuador. Kyle holds a BA in Art and Reconciliation Studies from Bethel University and an MFA from California Institute of the Arts. Kyle is a 2022-2023 participant of the studio program at the Whitney ISP.
