I am researching the abundance and distribution of hemipteran hoppers (leafhoppers, treehoppers, planthoppers, and spittlebugs) across North Carolina, visiting various state parks to sample and photograph species and increase our knowledge of which species are found in the state. There have been several aspects to this project. First, I have been doing intensive sampling across the state, in a variety of state parks and habitats, and documenting, photographing and, in some instances, collecting specimens of the species found. The other aspect of this effort has been creating an online database for hopper records that serves several functions: an interactive online photographic field guide, with informative species accounts, and a citizen science platform that enables the public to submit their own hopper sightings.
