Dr. Wetzel has been engineering state-of-the-art wind energy systems since 1993. This includes performing or managing the design of dozens of wind turbine rotor blade models for OEMs around the world. Dr. Wetzel has been a pioneer in the development of advanced blade technologies, including carbon-based torsion-bending coupling. He holds 14 patents in the U.S. and internationally on rotor blade inventions. Starting in 2007, he began to provide engineering services to owners and operators of wind farms to assist with field operational issues they were experiencing. This includes helping assess risk associated with damage and aging of blades, developing risk remediation strategies, assisting with developing repair programs, engineering structural repairs, and contracting, supervising, and auditing the quality of repairs. Dr. Wetzel also provides expert witness services related to rotor blade issues. Dr. Wetzel's areas of expertise include: -- Wind Turbine Blade Design and Manufacturing-- Aerodynamics-- Composite Structures Engineering-- Forensics Engineering and Root Cause Analysis-- Blade Damage and Risk Assessment and Remediation-- Blade RepairsDr. Wetzel serves as a Technical Expert to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and as the Technical Advisor (Chairman) of the US Technical Advisory Group (USTAG) for IEC TC88, and he is a voting member of the U.S. National Committee for IEC TC88, the IEC MT 61400-5 and the IEC PT 61400-101. Dr. Wetzel is a Fellow of ASME and an Associate Fellow of AIAA. Dr. Wetzel holds a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Kansas and an M.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
