I entered the business world when I was a 7th grader at Woodbury Middle School in Las Vegas. I could buy a four-pack of Bubblicious at Walmart for $1.00, then resale each pack for $0.50. I quickly became known as the “Gum Guy.” In high school, I purchased cleaning equipment that I installed in a small trailer that I pulled behind my 1979 Suburban. I printed business cards that said “K.A.D. Auto Detailing.” With my trailer and business cards, I started my own mobile auto detailing business. I learned that people pay good money for a clean car.In college, I had hopes of becoming an optometrist. I declared my major in zoology, which I later changed to construction management, and then to accounting. In reflecting on that decision to change my major a second time, I don’t think I was as interested in the subject of accounting as I was in the fact that it was a very competitive program and one of the highest ranked in the nation. During my first general accounting course, my interest genuinely started to grow when the teacher referred to accounting as the language of business. After finishing both my undergraduate and graduate work in accounting, I followed the same “Big 4” path that most of my classmates took. My seven years at PwC allowed me to work with some phenomenal teams and took me to Salt Lake City, Dallas, Washington DC and Las Vegas. However, I always felt like there was life after public accounting, and I longed to try working at a small business or startup. A great opportunity came in late 2013 when I was invited to join the Yamagata Enterprises Family Office and help lead some of their newly acquired businesses. With time, I would eventually help lead two other young companies. In 2019, I stepped back into the world of public accounting when I joined Fair, Anderson, & Langerman as a director and later filling the role of CFO. In January 2022, I assumed the role of CEO, and I've loved working with our team and clients. What attracted me to FAL was its entrepreneurial client base and firm culture. My background in running small businesses has given me the edge in working with my clients to achieve their long-term goals. And while the accounting industry, like so many others, is experiencing major shifts and disruptions, our team has been successfully adapting to these changes. Being part of a dynamic team has been exciting as we continue to grow our firm and offer a rewarding career to our professionals.
