Tanzania
I extended my time in Tanzania to take advantage of the two years of previous work becoming fluent in Swahili and well accustomed to the culture. I decided to work for a local, Tanzanian ran rural development NGO called SEMA. There I stepped in assisting SEMA with ongoing projects such as water use and sanitation development in rural communities especially for schools and beekeeping modernization. I also have introduced new appropriate technologies to SEMA's engineers and craftsman including solar ovens, the SODIS water purification technique, solid waste recycling projects such as reusing plastic water bottles as bricks, gardening containers, and solar tube sky lights. In all new technologies I search out and then promote I focus on environmental protection linked with poverty alleviation which, I think, should never be mutually exclusive.
Singida, Tanzania
My number one priority was integration into my Tanzanian community, a Swahili speaking rural farming community, to fully understand their developmental goals, especially in relation to environmental pursuits. I then identified community counterparts to assist by providing them access directly or indirectly to the education, tools, and funds necessary to help them reach closer to their goals. I undertook this task in an environment of challenging social and physical obstacles, which I found motivating. Some of my large scale project accomplishments include creation of a library at the village's primary school and multiple beekeeping seminars to local communities. However I believe the countless one on one interactions with my fellow villagers, providing lessons on appropriate technologies, or simply having long discussions in Swahili sharing and correcting mutual cultural views were invaluable.
