When I was 17, something strange came over me: a sudden, singular obsession with Antarctica. It was a whole continent that few people think about and even fewer set foot on. Growing up in rural Virginia, that alien world of blue-white ice terrified and enchanted me, and my feverish love for it caused something to shift in my gut. My writing and songwriting suddenly had a new focus. A fascination with maps flourished. Most importantly, a deep concern about climate change settled into my stomach and sat there like a lump of lead.The next years took me all over the world: I earned astronomy and physics degrees at UVA; I formed a band and toured North America and Europe; I built my own business as a professional writer; and I moved to Vermont and built my own home, carbon-neutral farmstead, and log cabin music studio. The love for ice never left me, nor did that lump in my stomach. So in 2022, I decided to put my building, project management, and communication skills into action in fighting against climate change. I enrolled in Terra.do's Climate Change: Learning for Action course and began networking with hundreds of others locally and around the world. We schemed about everything from the pragmatic to the moonshot. As a lover of numbers, I've looked at the plausibility of everything from space elevators to gravity batteries and beyond, but what I've settled on is this: the solutions we need to save the planet are mostly already here. In 2023 I co-founded Learnewable with long-time (and, though he doesn't like compliments, successful) entrepreneur Jeremy Solomon. Our mission is to rapidly accelerate the development of utility-scale renewables. To accomplish this, we are building a platform and a process to substantially reduce developer risk by revolutionizing community engagement with technology and psychology. I am dedicating my career and life to this mission. I want to live on a planet whose natural systems are allowed to work. I want green, leafy summers and white, snowy winters; I want happy, healthy people and thriving wildlife. And as for Antarctica, I won't stop until I feel certain that the childhood vision I had of it won't become the stuff of history.
