At Pine Rest, I worked in a household of 8 high schoolers with varying mental health diagnoses and needs. I gained consistent, tangible experience with de-escalation techniques, crisis intervention, trauma-informed care, leadership, and more. I had to be quick on my feet in this role and calm at all times. Earning staff of the month within my first two months as full-time staff, I strived to be the best psychiatric technician I could be for these kids, my coworkers, and my overseers. I found this work to be deeply rewarding and inspiring.

At Cornerstone, I worked in a dorm hall that totaled well over 100 residents. In the midst of what many are calling the “Loneliness Epidemic”, I found myself regularly handling crises experienced by the residents. Severe depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts and behavior, trauma, and unplanned pregnancies are just a handful of examples of the struggles that repeatedly came up throughout my time there.In this role, I learned what it means to be a leader that others find hope relying on. I was blessed to be able to work in this role and engage with these residents in such profound ways.

What originally began as a "childhood dream job" quickly turned into a job far more intense than I had expected. At the Springs, I managed a cabin of girls ages 10-12. I learned very quickly that when you offer a safe space, kids are eager to share the troubles of their life and seek help. In this role, I learned how to support, work with, and communicate with kids navigating traumatic life experiences. To this day, I hold the experiences I gained at the Springs, as well as the young girls I got to mentor, closely to my heart.
