My name is Kyra Potter and I am a recent UCLA graduate aspiring to become a Physicians Assistant. I am contacting you because I am interested in getting more acquainted with the treatment options that your clinic provides. Additionally, I am seeking a possible opportunity to shadow to gain experience in the healthcare field to better prepare myself for not only applying to PA school but pursuing a future career as a PA. In June 2020, I received my bachelor’s degree in psychobiology from UCLA. While at the university, I participated in research for over 2 years, the bulk of which was focused on understanding the neural mechanism of axon regeneration occurring after a corticospinal injury. During my time in the lab, I expanded my skills in fluorescent microscopy, perfusion protocols, and genotyping. During my time at UCLA, I also took part in a hospital volunteer program known as Care Extenders. While a part of the program I was able to shadow nurses and care partners, at UCLA’s Ronald Reagan, as they fulfilled their responsibilities. The program is broken up into rotations, and during each rotation, you could volunteer on a different specialty-specific floor. For my first rotation, I was assigned to a post-surgical floor; for my second rotation, I was assigned to a hematology-oncology outpatient clinic. Though short-lived due to the onset of the virus, my time during both these rotations proved invaluable. It heightened my knowledge of the relationship between healthcare workers and their patients and confirmed my passion for pursuing a career in the healthcare field.Last year I participated in a 6-month clinical research internship as a part of Duke University's BIGGER Program and am currently employed as a patient care tech. I am interested in supplementing this research opportunity and my current work experience with in-person shadowing, if at all possible.
