Acquired responsibility for a difficult EM telemetry project, identified its technical issues and market deficiencies, and advocated project changes.One of my big wins during this period: I successfully led a mud pulse telemetry improvement project that more than doubled the system's telemetry rate.

Manager of a software development group of 20+ programmers assigned to new product development for the Sperry Drilling Services division. Visual C, C++ and C# were used to develop a suite of applications for Measurement-While-Drilling and Logging-While-Drilling. The application suite performed configuration, control, monitoring, processing, reporting, plotting, communication and replication of information collected. The architecture was a novel system that supported application communications through the network layer; the application suite operated on one computer or was distributed across many.I hired, trained, evaluated, and improved the performance of the programming staff. Created software development schedules, allocated resources to projects, reviewed projects, and created best practices for software development. Collaborated with management and operations groups to create fit-for-purpose commercial applications.I was the company's advocate for network connected applications. Successfully commercialized several web enabled products with first-to-market status in this industry.I guided the wireline software development group in adopting this application suite framework and migrating existing wireline applications to Visual C++ and the PC platform.One of my big wins during this period: I designed a data compression algorithm for our web-based data visualization application that increased the data transfer rate by 7X. A patent was filed and awarded.

Persuaded, begged, and/or bribed management to implement new technologies, or did it anyway when management wasn't looking Performed coop student and intern recruiting for the engineering development group. A big win during this period: Leading a team of college interns, I took a suite of primitive oilfield services applications from an obsolete hardware platform to the PC platform, within a 6 month "get-it-working-or-else" timeline. Added significant new features and met short-term delivery requirements for commercial releases at 6 month intervals. Vastly increased application reliability to mission-critical levels ("never fail, never crash"), improved processing speed by >20x, reduced hardware costs by 90%, added new downhole tool support by customer delivery deadlines, and added high-speed & low-cost log plotting. The project was so successful that all college interns were offered permanent positions upon graduation.
