The first half of my career (20+ years or so) was dedicated to charging ahead. I rushed through college, immigrated thanks to a merit-based scholarship for an MBA and later an MSc, embarked on an energy trading, capital markets and banking career, climbed upward and eventually became CFO for Wells Fargo’s Markets business. A first half building experience in a competitive and highly regulated industry where I was taught how to develop and implement programs to meet new banking regulations, optimize returns for a business, build winning teams, fail a lot and recover from mistakes faster. During that time, I also made long lasting friendships and met mentors who still keep me grounded and tell me when I go wrong (not always easy stuff to hear, but necessary). To this day, my close friends and mentors are my “board of directors”.As I enter my 2nd half, I am taking stock of what is close to my heart and brings me energy – my family, strong friendships who value deep conversations, creating roots in my adopted country and community, peace and equity, and, have fun too! I also still love the reward of putting together a great strategy with a team, being thoughtful about the details, and celebrating successes. I like implementing a strong plan. I want to share everything I know and learn new tricks. What strikes me as I think of what’s next is that my community is 50th out of 50 in terms of upward mobility (https://doi.org/10.1093/qje/qju022). A child born in Charlotte, NC, the 2nd US banking center, is likely to remain in poverty their entire life. So there is a lot of work to do. Many organizations, mostly nonprofits are digging in the research, and helping transform Charlotte. My goal is to join them and participate in the rebuild of an equitable community. To this end, I leverage leadership and financial skills to support nonprofits, small businesses and start-ups whose mission is focused on social impact by serving as a board member or providing CFO consulting services. In addition, no community can thrive without a strong network of community banks, and my goal is to share my experience about managing risk, setting governance, and develop a winning strategy as an advisor or as an independent board member.
