A few minutes into the conversation, all of his technical questions had been answered. Then he began telling me stories about the business he owned with his wife, stories about his kids, and stories from his time growing up in middle Tennessee and how much it's changed.He finally stopped to take a breath.We had been on the phone for 25 minutes.(Silence)(More Silence)(Seriously - More Silence)At this point, my wife is physically motioning me to speak - she can't take it. It's a scary thing.Most have been living with their problems for a long time.Their problems are like the annoying roommates you learn to ignore. "My job is to tell you what's wrong, how we fix it, and how much it costs. Your job will be to tell me if it makes sense for you and your wife to tackle."He nodded and continued to show me the remainder of his home.When I first entered sales, moments like this would have ended my chances.I would have resigned to the fact that he didn't want to make a decision and over-empathized with his aversion to making a decision. Not this time. Something clicked. I had a great manager who cared enough to show me this flaw, and this was my first chance to act on it and get better. His home ended up needing $32,000 in repairs. (Average sale was $8,000)I explained each repair to him in detail and offered him the pros and cons of acting vs. not acting. "Sounds good; let's do it all. Where do I sign?"Sometimes people fear acting because they've grown comfortable. I believe it's a salesperson's job to show clients the benefits of taking action and give them the respect and space to decide for themselves.
