Graduating in 2018 from the University of Waterloo's Rhetoric, Media, and Professional Communication program, I spent years studying theories of communication and rhetoric learning new ways to reach audiences of diverse economic, ethnic, and ideological backgrounds. The most important lesson I have learned is to never compromise the core principles of an idea when trying to communicate it. It is much more important and productive, in my experience, to correctly identify the aspects of that idea which will resonate best with an intended audience. Where compromise might transform an original idea or message into something that doesn't even resemble the initial intent, an adaptive and flexible methodology of communication means that you can speak anyone's language —that you can be equally understood across any demographic.
