I live for the “Aha!” moments.Nothing beats those flashes of sudden inspiration, insight, recognition, or comprehension.Growing up, I couldn’t decide whether I wanted to be a scientist or an artist. Then it dawned on me that what drew me to each was the common denominator for doing both well—the need to foster a beginner’s mindset. What’s that? It’s letting go of what we expect and what we think we know about something and seeing things with curiosity, eagerness, and an open mind. Nothing’s mundane if you can approach it with fresh eyes. Bonus points if you add in patience and a playful sense of humor.I love to boogie between details and the big picture. I get a kick out of coming up with illuminating questions, finding unexpected connections, and restructuring information as needed for clarity. That's key whether I'm learning, communicating, or teaching. So it's no surprise that I've always gravitated to situations where I have to master skills and information, and then be ready to think on my feet when things don't go as anticipated. Flexible and adaptable. Working in an ER, training flight students, helping establish startups, being a caseworker, studying languages, and doing photoshoots, as examples. As an information developer, I make documentation accessible and relevant for the user or audience. Moreover, away from the keyboard, I love working with my hands, making art for the joy of it.SPECIALTIESNetworking, Datacomm, Telecomm | Aviation | Instrumentation | Medical, Healthcare, Pharmacy | Social Services | Education & TrainingDOCUMENT TYPESUser Manuals | Technical & Reference Documents | Quick Start Guides | Processes, Procedures, Standards, Policies, Guidelines | Context-Sensitive Help | Online Help Utilities | Website Content | Professional-quality Photographic and Product ArtworkWell versed in FrameMaker, Adobe [InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Lightroom, Acrobat, Dreamweaver], WebWorks ePublisher, MadCap Flare, and other commercial and proprietary publishing tools.

Senior Staff WriterVerilink 1996 - 1998San Jose, California, United States• Defined, proposed, and directed redesign of Verilink's website. Accelerated schedule to deliver new site in eight weeks instead of twelve with no increase in budget. Targeted three major audiences: customers, financial analysts, and potential employees. Created majority of new content; solicited and edited all other content. Received corporate recognition award and bonus for excellence as webmaster. • Instrumental in reducing advertising and marketing collateral costs by developing ads, brochures, information bulletins, presentations, and spec sheets in house. This allowed Verilink to increase its media presence severalfold by redistributing funds that would otherwise have been spent on agency overhead. • Systematized marketing collateral structure to simplify and integrate outbound marketing materials. Defined each collateral type by audience, purpose, and print standards. • Developed effective sales tools and comprehensive product launch kits for direct and channel representatives. Kits included collaterals, sales presentations, tutorials, application guides, pricing sheets, and competitive analysis. Directed, managed, and implemented easy and timely distribution via print media and secure access to website. • Bolstered company image by defining corporate style guide to unify and bridge the gaps between corporate communications, marketing, and technical publications. -
Senior Technical Information DeveloperVerilink 1992 - 1996San Jose, California, United States• Introduced low-cost, low-maintenance proposal for high-quality multilingual translation of manuals and marketing collaterals. Supported proposal with streamlined plan for systematized, modular reorganization of content for single-source reuse in technical manuals, on-line help, CD publishing, and Web. Secured bid and funding.• Initiated interdepartmental customer surveys and increased document usability by reorganizing manual structure and increasing the use of graphics and process flow charts. Worked cross-functionally with engineering and technical support to apply these findings to improve the network management user interfaces. • Planned, created, and/or maintained user manuals, graphics aids, and reference materials for T1, T3, and E1 telecommunications equipment. Created, documented, and implemented new layout and style standards. • Reviewed and edited all company and process documentation required to achieve ISO 9001 certification. Additionally, streamlined and documented manual development and release process. • Translated product collaterals into Spanish for international product. • Prepared an in-country analysis and evaluation of Estonia's telecommunications status and needs as part of a larger project to evaluate Verilink's potential market in newly emerging European countries. -
Contract Technical WriterIbm 1990 - 1991Palo Alto, California, United States• Researched, analyzed, restructured, wrote, and edited the authoritative company documentation for software project development and management. These procedures and guidelines described all activities and reports required of project planners and managers to meet corporate requirements for audibility, business controls, design, quality assurance, and tracking. • Overhauled all project report instructions and forms for internal and external design, test strategies and plans, hardware requirements, work schedules, dependencies, product installation, etc.• Broke through the corporate stalemate by early cultivation of reviewer collaboration and buy-in. Succeeded where four consecutive writers had failed to win final document acceptance.

System 33 ConsultantXerox Parc 1988 - 1990Palo Alto, California, United StatesEntrusted as a stealth instigator, I collaborated and cross-pollinated across three research labs and administration to elicit innovative technology applications and cultivate synergy among the researchers. [Electronic Documents Lab, Computer Science Lab, and System Sciences Lab]To bridge communication between scientists and support staff, I developed user documentation for an interlaboratory computer research project. Cataloged bugs, potholes, and wish lists. Played devil's advocate. These activities became the springboard for usability testing and iterative redesign.Media created included hardcopy and interactive electronic documents, computer graphics, videos, and forums. It was a joy to work with smart, imaginatively inventive folks and play with all their inventions. -
