Through my work I as an engineer the following captures some highlights of outcomes from my work;• Captured over $2.76M/yr in fiberglass material savings and utilization by using AutoCAD software with Eastman Easicut software to most efficiently configure how large laminate layers should be broken into smaller pattern layers to accommodate production fiber placement limitations. Achieved glass layup cycle time drop and further cost reductions as a direct result of improvements.• Participated in three successful blade model changes, factory retoolings and production ramp up programs. Sought ways to improve manufacturing techniques and efficiencies with each successive blade model change.• Developed engineering documentation and process work instructions. Reviewed and revised core and glass laminate drawings. Communicated with core material suppliers to coordinate material movement.• Interacted with material selection, handling and use/utilization. Established robust repeatable processes parameters to build sub component composites while looking for ways to reduce cost by increasing quality and throughput.• Created a company nomenclature system to manage the large volume of unique fiberglass patterns.• Achieved lowest cost options with three blade models which optimized core material usage and improved mold layup cycle times. Core packaging and delivery innovations created $200+ per blade in savings.

Identified production inconsistencies and inefficiencies as a part of small focused teams. Worked independently on projects that standardized mold inventories and identification. Devised computer based ways to streamline tasks, prevent problems and track production data. Helped innovate mold design and ancillary tooling. Approved composite layup design after pilot production runs. Used Jetcam/Surfcam software to improve pre-preg pattern cutting, increasing material usage efficiencies. Consistently worked with factory labor personnel to train, certify, and improve their work performance. Implemented processes that would reduce scrap and improve throughput. Worked to capture and codify verbal manufacturing knowledge from molders for different manufacturing processes. Molded Fiber Glass Company/Texas (MFG) primarily produced wind turbine rotor blades using VARTM methods. Assured adherence to the facilities manufacturing process plan and provided technical instruction and supervision for the employees on the production floor. Consulted with customer General Electric's (GE) Site Quality Engineering and GE Design Engineering, when mistakes in composite part fabrication were made, to conduct noncompliance reviews. Implemented the proposed solutions provided by MFG Engineering and GE Engineering. Principal responsibilities for MFG’s automated Fanuc Robot trim and drill station and MFG’s automated 5-axis CNC Quintax Router were: maintaining, troubleshooting, programming, networking with technical assistance, and coordinating process improvements. Was primary engineer heading a project to program the 5-axis CNC router to cut digitized rotor blade foam patterns. This project encompassed manufacturing process design, CNC programming, prototype tooling and equipment adaptation/improvements. Other responsibilities of this position included presenting training sessions for composite part fabrication, testing of material properties, creating and revising work instruction protocols, and assuring product quality requirements.

Worked with Advanced Development Group engineers on projects to improve the manufacturing processes and molding techniques used in the manufacture of their aircraft. Was involved in several projects primarily related to the development of Cirrus’ new prototype jet. Worked in the lab testing various composite and ceramic based materials’ strengths and limitations (variables tested included temperature extremes, weathering, material integrity, molding ability, drying time, etc.). Was also involved in the quality improvement of “bushing plugs” (temporary plugs used to prevent air leakage into the composite lay-up). Obtained a greater understanding, through this hands-on work experience, of design and manufacturing engineering as well as experience in: problem solving, documentation, organization, teamwork, company policies, procedures, communication, logistics, and inventory. Gained experience sketching and modeling designs, working through the design phases, and communicating with engineers (presenting findings, and discussing ideas for improvement and experimental uses of materials).
