Disasters such as Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy and the terrorist attack of 9/11 were dramatic examples of events in which unprepared organizations’ business operations were severely disrupted. Hardly anyone thinks a disaster or a terrorist incident will happen to them. Business continuity planning is critical to prepare for, respond to and mitigate business disruptions and to build business resilience. If a crisis does occur, you should have plans in place to recover critical operations as quickly as possible. As an emergency preparedness professional, I am aware of the importance of being prepared for all types of contingencies. I worry so you don’t have to. MY PREPAREDNESS PHILOSOPHY:✔Let’s make investments in business resilience.✔ Let’s focus on continuous improvement. Prepare, respond, mitigate, recover and evaluate.✔ Let’s consider employees as partners in building, sustaining, and maintaining operational resilience.✔ Let’s treat vendors as partners in building resilience.✔ Let’s remember the equity of all stakeholders in the emergency preparedness and recovery enterprise. ✔ Let’s work with partners in government and non governmental organizations in developing emergency and business continuity plans. THE TOP PLANNING QUESTIONS I ASK EXECUTIVES:1. What are your current emergency plans? 2. What are your existing SOPs, if any? What is your current state?3. What are your critical business operations? What are your vulnerabilities?4. How you plan to train staff, teams and vendors on your emergency preparedness plans?5. How do you currently communicate with stakeholders? Who are these stakeholders, what channels do you use and is there consistent messaging? THE LEADERSHIP SKILLS I BRING TO THE TABLE:• I lead from the front.• I empower my team.• I am resilient and level-headed.• I am profoundly results-oriented.• I am sensitive when managing expectations during a crisis.• I believe in balancing collaboration with decisive action.
