Branch Dental Clinic & Naval Medical Center San Diego

Naval Medical Center is a 277-bed multispecialty hospital with 18 surgical suites, 11 primary care clinics, 10 dental clinics, and military and civilian staff of 6,200 serving active duty military and families. Nationally recognized for clinical and research excellence, including cutting–edge work with refractive surgery and PTSD.  Served in multiple roles of varying scope across units including Lead Surgical Technician and Administrative Supervisor for OB/GYN, General Surgery, and Oral Surgery, and Administrative Assistant for Surgical Services. Improved OR efficiency and reduced surgical case time for approximately 840 General Surgery and OB/GYN patients monthly by 50% by establishing cleanup crew trained to more rapidly prepare OR between cases. Transformed inefficient, paper-based personnel recordkeeping system into streamlined, Excel-based system enabling faster tracking of separation and transfer dates; recorded and tracked data for 10 personnel. Conducted orientation for new General Surgery and OB/GYN personnel, trained staff in department processes, policies, and best practices, and provided ongoing mentoring and supervision for 25 surgical technicians. Scheduled 100+ oral surgery cases monthly for three oral surgeons and five dental technicians. Architected and implemented Mentor Program that improved succession planning and enabled consistent staffing of 18 ORs and all specialty areas; paired new and seasoned technicians in each specialty for cross-training. Planned, scheduled, and ensured seamless execution of board meetings for senior personnel.  Cost-effectively managed annual operating budget of $400,000 and equipment of over $2 million; created efficient processing system for ordering of surgical supplies and instruments to improve budget tracking ability. Reduced medical waste and minimized environmental impact by utilizing system to divert waste to hazardous recycling bin instead of incinerating.

Navy ship based in San Diego and deployed worldwide for combat missions and humanitarian efforts. Earned numerous awards for excellence.  Accountable for maintaining over $2 million in hospital equipment and instrumentation utilized by Neurology, Orthopedics, General Surgery, and Gynecological Services.  Realized over $10,000 in savings by networking with local Naval Clinics’ supply technicians to secure missing instruments and supplies. Provided ongoing support for four OR and 10 medical personnel to ensure seamless daily operations.  Coordinated efficient execution of Women’s Health Program; increased women’s readiness for duty from 69% to 98% by partnering with local clinic and hospital to ensure provision of quality medical services and treatments. Conducted orientation for new ship personnel and trained eight staff members on proper instrument sterilization and clinical procedures to ensure adherence to best practices. Scheduled medical appointments via phone and e-mail and coordinated provision of service at external clinics as required to facilitate timely treatment of patients and adherence to policies, procedures, and quality standards.  Accurately maintained 1500 paper-based medical records; reviewed and updated records as necessary, corrected discrepancies, and ensured adherence to standards for regular HIPAA and OSHA inspections
