About Lan Tornes
I am interested in a position where I can apply my scientific knowledge and skills to enhance my experiences and provide needed services. My career has focused on water science, but I diversify into all of the physical and natural sciences. I am equally comfortable in an office managing projects and staff, analyzing data, and writing reports; managing a laboratory analyzing samples, providing quality assurance, and maintaining equipment; or a field setting performing site reconnaissance, collecting samples, calibrating equipment, and making measurements. I have been successful as an instructor, trainer, and mentor because I enjoy working with others while having the confidence to work independently. Although most of my career has been in applied and research-based science, my more recent work has provided guidance needed by others to make informed management decisions. I have managed numerous projects and presented many technical papers in written and oral formats. I would enjoy continuing to provide direction, organization, and sharing of information with others.I also enjoy tasks that include physical application. I enjoy construction, equipment repair and maintenance, and outdoor activities. The diversion and insight gained during field work has been an important complement to my interpretive work.Specialties: I serve as vice chair on the board of the Upper Rum River Watershed Management Organization. I am a licensed pesticide applicator with a CDL. I have experience with sales, customer service, property management and maintenance, equipment repair and maintenance, construction, skid-steer loaders and forklifts, and working outdoors. A considerable part of my work has entailed developing cooperative relationships with clients and potential customers.
Listed skills include Water Quality, Water Resources, Hydrology, Environmental Science, and 19 others.

I find this work fulfilling because I enjoy engaging customers to help them find solutions to their widely-ranging problems.
Crew Manager
I completed a seasonal position as a Minnesota-licensed pesticide applicator treating lakes and ponds to control unwanted aquatic vegetation. This physically-demanding work entailed teamwork and independent initiative to apply recommended quantities of regulated chemicals at the optimum time to effectively provide maximum control of weeds and related components in a variety of urban and rural lacustrine systems.
Environmental Scientist
I worked as an environmental scientist and project manager in HEI’s Maple Grove, MN office during the last few years. My work for a variety of clients focused on water quality, assessing impaired aquatic systems, designing and implementing water-quality monitoring programs to better understand water resources, and evaluating resource-management practices. My work encompassed geochemistry, limnology, hydrology, hydraulics, and computer modeling. I conducted work primarily in Minnesota, but also in North Dakota and Montana. Details about my relevant experience are available on request.
Hydrologist
Most of my career was working as a hydrologist for the U.S. Geological Survey; proposing, planning, and completing a variety of complex resource investigations. Most recently, I served as the Water-Quality Specialist for the USGS Minnesota Water-Science Center. My work encompassed all aspects of natural and anthropogenic resources that are related to water quality. I provided training and consultation to other scientists and technicians that collected water-quality data. Critical aspects were the need to collect representative samples of the media being assessed; including streams, lakes, wetlands, and ground water. Most of my experience has been acquired in Minnesota, but I also lived and worked for many years each in Montana and Maine. I managed and supervised a modest-sized staff, managed District laboratories, facilitated reports preparation and production, and reviewed and quality-assured analytical data from a variety of internal and external sources.
