Provide Systems Engineering support to the Schriever Wargame and its various table top seminars across the United States. Responsibilities range from project and logistics management, to systems administration, operating system deployment and cable pulling. The Schriever Wargame system is a small, three node VMware cluster hosting Active Directory, Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint, and other core services on iSCSI storage arrays protected by Symantec Backup Exec. In addition, engage in regular maintenance of system software and hardware firmware via updates.

System Administrator

Colorado Springs, Co, Us

Maintain the National Tactical Data Manager (NTDM) operational and development suites, and support the GMSky Hadoop cluster as an augementing system administrator. Other than re-designing the iSCSI storage topology while the system was operational, NTDM has been super easy. Maintain this, update that, it's all pretty par for course for VMware, Windows Server and EMC storage arrays. The GMSky cluster however, is a different cat entirely which is nice. I've received exposure to Puppet, writing manifest for certain categories of machines, learning Kickstart PXE kung-fu to make it all work over the wire, as well as YAML, because we don't have enough markup languages as it is. Learning new stuff is fun and CentOS rocks, definitely like it more than other distros as a server platform. Getting back full time into the *NIX world is nice, because I think the error reporting is just better in the NIX world than windows, so a simple tail -f will often clue you in, whereas in the Windows world you're playing 20 questions.

Jun 2014 - Jul 2015

System Engineer

Cary, Nc, Us

During my time with USfalcon I maintained several networks of varying size. Ran on the update treadmill for several years updating Windows, VMware, Symantec Products, McAfee ePO & it's suite of products like Enterprise Antivirus and Data Loss Prevention (DLP) & firmware in order to stay current, stable, secure and not to mention compliant.Installed multiple VMview environments leveraging virtualized Windows 7 desktops accessed by zero clients utilizing the PCoIP protocol, which is hands down the best remote desktop protocol I've ever worked with and supported.Updated a couple networks domain and forest levels to 2008R2 which is amazingly simple. Migrated the domain controllers from 2003 to 2008R2 and updated the replication technology from FRS (boo!) to DFSR (yay!) which got rid of some wrapping errors.Upgraded a 2003 Exchange server that still had old 5.5 LDAP entries to 2007 using Autodiscover to automagically configure our customer's email clients combined with SSL certs to encrypt the RPC connections. Then upgraded that to Exchange 2010 which was a MUCH easier process.Performed quit a few VMware migrations on operational networks which is always a hoot.Introduced WMI queries and security filtering on group policies to flatten out Active Directory's OU structure, making it easy to maintain security compliance and adding sanity to troubleshooting. It was a great gig while it lasted and I'l always appreciate the opportunities that the job presented.
