Responsible for Emergency Services, North American Flat Roll operations; consisting of twelve plants. The respective Emergency Services Chiefs of those plants reported directly to me. These responsibilities included but were not limited to patrol, fire, technical rescue, emergency medical services, investigations and hazardous materials. Additional responsibilities included the establishment of standard corporate procedures and policies.

Responsible for Emergency Services at the Gary, Midwest and East Chicago facilities. The Gary Complex, Emergency Services organization was comprised of 78 hourly personnel and 14 managers. These employees collectively comprised a Patrol Division, Investigations Division and two fully equipped fire stations. All personnel were firefighter, EMT and hazardous materials qualified.

Responsible for safety operations at the Gary, Midwest and East Chicago facilities. Directly supervised 9 safety managers and an administrative assistant. Developed plant safety objectives, programs and plans for implementation. Worked with Plant Managers to create yearly goals and action plans for achievement. Under my leadership, the overall injury frequency rate was reduced by 10%, $172,000 in cost reductions implemented and no OSHA citations were received, which has never been achieved before.

Responsible for daily safety operations as well as all 1,000 personnel of the Midwest facility. Worked with Plant Managers to create yearly objectives and actions plans for achievement. Direct reports included 10 union and management personnel. Under my leadership, the total injury rate was reduced by 68% to achieve the lowest rate in the plant’s history. In addition, no OSHA complaints or citations were received and every safety record the plant facility has ever held was broken. The plant’s overall corporate standing improved from 17th place out of 18 facilities to number 2.

Responsible for Safety in the Steel Producing, Sheet and Hot Rolling Divisions. Participated in an OSHA wall to wall inspection. Under my leadership, the total injury rate was reduced for each division as follows: Steel Producing (31%), Sheet (54%) and Hot Rolling (69%).

Responsible for the Steel Producing Spares complex, which included the ordering, receiving, maintenance and delivery of spare parts for the Steel Producing Division. Supervised 16 personnel, which included maintenance technicians, equipment operators and expeditors. The complex consisted of 7 warehouse buildings (379,450 square feet), with overhead cranes and mobile equipment. Under my leadership, there were no injuries in the department, $169,150 in cost savings implemented, manpower was reduced by 31% and productivity was increased by 17%.

Responsible for maintenance of the Steel Producing Propane Facility and insuring its compliance with OSHA’s Process Safety Management (PSM) standard. In addition, maintaining production equipment for various units located in the facility’s #2 Q-BOP. Under my leadership, there were no injuries in my unit, 500 potential OSHA violations were identified and corrected, and maintenance equipment reliability was improved from 72% to 95%.

Responsible for the safety of approximately 1,500 hourly and management employees. Under my leadership, the total injury rate was reduced by 57%.

Responsible for patrolling the plant and surrounding properties, detection-mitigation of fires and emergency medical care. Developed the department’s Advance-EMT protocols. Member of the U.S. Steel Gary Works Emergency Response Team, which handled hazardous materials incidents, confined space responses and other specialized recues. Member of the U.S. Steel Gary Works Critical Incident Stress Debriefing Team.
