After spending more than two decades, as a business owner in the residential and commercial tree industry, I was injured, and consequently became disabled. After becoming disabled eight years ago, I went back to school, to finish my education and then attained a degree in paralegal science. I chose a legal field as my new career because my experience, knowledge and education I benefited from as a business owner would become relevant when practicing, analyzing and researching legal principles and theories. My experience and subsequently my age becomes a general asset rather than an encumbrance. These real world skills that I learned over time are assets when relating to and interviewing potential clients, and for understanding, general principles in specific areas of law. Some of the areas my life experience beneficially intersects with my legal studies are in general, environmental, business, worker’s compensation, patent and property, personal injury, and family practices. Other, procedural and character attributes I learned as a business owner are a strong work ethic, professionalism, loyalty and the tenacity to follow a project through to a successful completion even when the end is unclear. The value of the foregoing skills is recognized, however perhaps more important is my ability to embrace compromise as a subtle tool in negotiation and at times when receiving instructions when critical thinking is necessary. As a Graduate of Paralegal Associate in Science, I learned to channel my experience and knowledge into a foundation for the betterment of my analysis, interpretation and application of case law and statutes to State or Federal jurisdictions.
