I volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in Dekalb Co., Ga. I worked together with a crew of volunteer leaders in renovating and building houses. In Dekalb Co., Habitat for Humanity mainly renovates existing houses as opposed to build new ones or new communities. I have a background in aircraft maintenance and metal fabrication, so those skills easily transferred to construction and renovation. In a short time, I became a lead volunteer.

World Tri Star Tools, Inc. is a Japanese company which was opened to support the Japanese automotive industry in the Southeast. My main job was to fabricate parts for custom machines. I also had other duties. I scheduled meetings with clients; delegated tasks to employees; determined what kind of and how much material to order. I kept records to keep track of things such as lead times for materials and services, receiving records for parts and materials, and individual task progress. Along with this, I supervised, created company policy, and trained employees. I was also the language and cultural interpreter between the Japanese management and the English speaking employees. And if that were not enough, I had to learn metal fabricating—something which I had never done before. In between all of this I was teaching myself how to use engineering design software—something similar to a computer aided design (CAD) program. In all, I had to learn to do many things in a short amount of time.

An assistant language teacher (ALT) in Japan works directly with the native teachers to help teach the English language. ALTs work primarily K-12 with the majority working in the middle schools. ALTs are hired by dispatch companies which, generally, on a yearly basis compete for contracts with boards of education throughout Japan. I mostly worked in elementary and middle schools, but I also taught ESL classes for adults.
