Lance Simms work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Physicist/Software Engineer
I am currently the flight software and embedded systems lead for the Space Science and Security Program at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. In this role I serve as the primary architect and developer for the C/C++ control software that we use on our satellite payloads. I am also primarily responsible for creating customized embedded Linux builds for a number of processors and SOMs using Yocto/Bitbake. My duties also include writing low-level device drivers for cameras and various other sensors, and using assembly code to port real-time operating systems to various microprocessors. In addition, I have served as the operations/astrodynamics lead for several satellite missions and a subject matter expert for the embedded development group at the lab.
President Of Postdoc Association
Postdoctoral Researcher
My primary duty as a postdoc at LLNL was writing and testing satellite track recognition algorithms as part of the Space Situational Awareness (SSA) CubeSat mission. The final algorithm was implemented in the firmware of the CubeSat optical payload. My independent research was directed at studies of gamma ray bursts and the x-ray background with Cadmium Zinc Telluride detectors.
Alma Commissioning Scientist
While working on the ALMA project, my duties consisted of instrument calibration and verification, software development, and data analysis.
Research Assistant
Throughout graduate school I worked on the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope camera, largely on detector development for the guide system. My work also consisted of data analysis, and computer simulations of telescope optics and detectors.
Computer Consultant
I administered three sub-networks at a Stanford graduate residence in addition to writing web pages for computer troubleshooting and helping students connect their computers to the Internet. I also served as a teaching assistant during two separate quarters for the Stanford undergraduate course CS196: Microcomputer Consulting. The teaching position included preparing and conducting full classroom lectures
President Of Stanford Astronomical Society
Research Intern
I worked to reduce persistence, dark current, and electrical noise in the HxRG HyViSi sensors. This involved building a test system nearly from scratch. I also wrote and documented runtime configurable firmware for the SIDECAR ASIC controller for use with Teledyne HxRG multiplexers. This firmware is now shipped with the SIDECAR development kit.
Software Engineer
I designed a graphical user interface, wrote software, and programmed firmware to control a SIDECAR ASIC controller used with Teledyne HxRG Hybrid Silicon PIN detectors. Additional work consisted of data analysis for testing and characterizing the H4RG detector, designing a mechanical mount and cabling for control electronics in Solidworks, and putting together a cryostat for CMOS detectors.
Developmental Technician
I worked with a high energy physics group on the semiconductor technology for the Compact Muon Solenoid. My work included, but was not limited to, computer programming, hardware design and testing, training, and
Undergraduate Tutor
With CLAS I tutored individuals and groups of students in mathematics, physics, statistics, and astronomy. And during my employment, I taught assistance courses in differential calculus and introductory physics.
