About Lance Bush

Dr. Bush served the space community for over four decades including the design of human space vehicles, national policy, international cooperation, commercialization of space, and STEM education with leadership positions in government, private sector and non-profits.Dr. Bush has extensive experience as a space vehicle designer at NASA and in the private sector having a key role in NASA vehicles including Orion, HL-20, National Aerospace Plane, planetary vehicles and private sector vehicles including SpaceX Dragon and Sierra Nevada Dream Chaser.Dr. Bush helped usher in space commercialization by opening up the International Space Station to private sector use as a first use case. Dr. Bush coordinated 16 countries and 5 space agencies of the International Space Station via a newly created multilateral committee to establish guidelines to allow commerce, then encouraged partner countries and companies resulting in some of the first commercial efforts.Dr. Bush served as NASA representative to the United Nations Committee on Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. In this role, he led the creation of Space Generation Advisory Council, now with over 29,000 members from more than 165 countries. He currently serves on the board of directors of Space Generation Advisory Council, Center for Integrated STEM Education (Philippines), and governing member and former board member of International Space University.Recently, Dr. Bush led Challenger Center as CEO for 12 years, operating in all 50 states and several foreign countries. During his tenure Challenger Center achieved growth across all measures including programming, finance, staff, infrastructure, and served over 2 million students, garnering the National Science Board’s Public Service Award.Dr. Bush continues to serve the space community. He co-led an effort to create a memorial for the crew of Apollo 1 at Arlington National Cemetery. He currently serves on the National Space Council, Users Advisory Group as the Chair of the Exploration and Discovery Committee. He serves as a reading judge for the United Kingdom’s Marshall Scholarships, and as a member of the Cosmos Club Award Committee at the Cosmos Club. He is an active member of The Explorers Club, and Sea Space Symposium. Dr. Bush holds a Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from Penn State University, a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Old Dominion University, a Doctor of Philosophy in Technology Policy and Management from Penn State University, and a SSP from International Space University.
