Vp, Research And Business Development
I was involved in many aspects of the business including research, product development, business development, antibody programs, grants, contracts, services, operations, administration and corporate activities. My work led to the identification of opportunities in countries such as Brazil, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand Turkey, Vietnam and large pharmaceutical companies. I also focused on developing technology and products that included cellular biology, molecular biology, ELISA and lateral flow kits. I was a core member of the team that enabled the sale of Bioo Scientific to Perkin Elmer in July of 2016. Following the sale of Bioo Scientific to Perkin Elmer, I managed aspects of the integration between the two companies as a member of the Austin leadership team. I then took on a role of managing initiatives to streamline manufacturing and operations processes and procedures. My efforts led to key initiatives in bringing automation into manufacturing and improve infrastructure.
Senior Scientist
I developed over 30 new products centered around siRNA and miRNA (i.e. siRNA expression vectors, kits for siRNA production, control siRNA, miRNA inhibitors, and specific antibody validated for analyzing siRNA knockdown and siRNA/miRNA labeling kits). This work helped Ambion become a market leader in the areas of RNAi and miRNA research which was instrumental during its sale to Applied Biosystems in 2006. During the transition from Ambion to Applied Biosystems, I was responsible for overseeing the siRNA product portfolio’s integrity by validating siRNAs to ensure effective algorithm guidelines were in place. This validation process was instrumental in determining product performance for the next generation siRNA in use today. In addition, I was instrumental in the development and support for micro RNA products including the precursor miRNA and the antisense miRNA molecules. I was also involved in writing reports, writing and editing trade journal and scientific articles, presenting research to management and scientists, managing groups of scientists, performing research, presenting work at trade shows and scientific meetings and organizing research efforts to accomplish the company’s goals.
Postdoctoral Researcher
Identified novel components of the human telomerase-ribonucleoprotein complex important for regulating telomerase activity and telomere length. I performed experiments which provided a clearer understanding of the regions of the human telomerase RNA that were important for telomerase activity. I subsequently developed experiments to demonstrate the alternative lengthening of telomeres pathway (ALT) can in be reversed by expressing the telomerase enzyme in conjunction with the telomerase RNA component. Interestingly the reversal was significantly facilitated by oxidative stress conditions providing clues to its mechanism. This experimental system opened the door for studies of the ALT mechanism and the impact of telomerase on a competing telomere maintenance pathway.
