I began my career attending New Mexico Tech in Socorro, NM focusing on a degree in chemical engineering. My first exposure to the industry and research climate was through Cabot corporation in Albuquerque, NM, where I worked with a team to develop new nano-particulates for ink-jet printing of silicon solar voltaic devices. After completing my degree, I moved to Morenci, AZ to take a job as a metallurgist in the hydrometallurgical division of Freeport McMoran Copper. While there I was able to oversee and manage several aspects and processes which included the operation and control of both the solvent extraction and electrowinning circuits. I decided to pursue my PhD in 2010 and was accepted to North Carolina State University's Chemistry department to pursue my research goals. My PhD investigated fundamental research at the materials science and engineering interface with chemistry on electron transfer kinetics of dendritically encapsulated redox sites, as well as, a joint project funded by Eastman aimed at modification of PET surfaces. After completion of my degree, I joined Solvay (Cytec at the time) under the Mining Solutions R&I division, which sought advanced and critical solutions to customers throughout the mining industry. In 2020 I joined LGI Forensic Engineering, to advance my career through learning new techniques and skills associated with failure analysis via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), digital microscopy, and a variety of materials and metallurgical techniques.

Research ChemistSolvay Aug 2015 - Aug 2019Brussels, BeI started work at Solvay under the MEP research division where our team focused on investigating and developing new products to aid customers in the metal solvent extraction and adjacent industries. I've since expanded my project and subject work and currently I work under Mining Solutions R&I, helping to lead teams and explore new ideas to generate products that customers in the mining industry need to make their processes faster, more efficient, safer, and more sustainable. I work at the bridge between application and design, and often use classic organic and inorganic synthetic methods, along with characterization, followed by experimental application designed to investigate new chemistries efficacy and ability to deliver solutions to our customers' needs. -
Phd Graduate StudentNc State University Aug 2010 - Aug 2015Raleigh, North Carolina, UsThesis: Electron transfer kinetics of dendritically encapsulated redox sitesEastman Research: Modification of PET surfacesMy work at NCSU encompasses two research projects under the tutelage of Dr. Chris Gorman. Our lab studies fundamental structure-property relationships of materials.First, I'm studying electron transfer kinetics to and from redox sites (homogeneous and heterogeneous electron transfer). As electronics miniaturize the need for smaller features becomes apparent, and electron transfer between units becomes a limiting factor in size. I propose a series of dendrimers to encapsulate redox cores at varying topologically well-defined lengthscales to elucidate the fundamental structure-property relationships between electron exchange and distance between two redox sites capable of undergoing electron transfer. My research takes various aspects of many chemistry disciplines, including: synthesis, e-chem, analytical separations, mass spec, and NMR spectroscopy. My second project is a joint project with the chemical engineering department at NCSU, and is funded by Eastman, aimed at changing certain properties of PET through surface modification, and gaining a fundamental understanding of the surface chemistry that occurs during modification. This project uses various surface sensitive techniques for characterization, which include XPS, ATR-FTIR, and TOF-SIMS, as well as, organic synthesis and characterization of any needed materials during our experiments (which included a brief exploration of dye synthesis).Along with my research duties, I have had the pleasure of managing the lab space which included scheduling, ordering of supplies, and oversight/delegation of duties to other lab members. I also spearheaded a safety committee within the surrounding labs that performed internal safety audits aimed at improving safety culture within our labs and smoothing external audits from the university's safety division, as well as, the EPA and OSHA -
MetallurgistFreeport-Mcmoran Copper & Gold Inc. 2008 - 2010Phoenix, Az, UsDuring my time at Freeport McMoRan I had the opportunity to oversee the process control and management of all four solvent extraction and all three electrowinning facilities at one point or another. As a metallurgist I was responsible for the process control around the hydrometallurgical copper production which included metrics such as plant flow and diversion, extraction and stripping efficiency (in the solvent extraction circuit), and electroplating amperage and electrolyte chemistry, which affect the quantity and quality of copper production (in the electrowinning circuit). I also became the site's resident expert on flame atomic absorption spectrometers, through help and training by our device's manufacturer, Perkin Elmer. I was also given to the opportunity to spend several month contracted out to the heap leaching division of the nearby mine in Safford, AZ to investigate an issue with leach line plugging. -
Research AssistantCabot Corporation 2007 - 2008Boston, Ma, UsI worked with Cabot Corp. over the summer of my third year in my undergraduate studies. I worked with a team of technicians and research scientists helping to develop conducting silver nanoparticle inks for inkjet printing of silicon solar photovoltaics. During my time there I was responsible for generating the nano-particulate inks as stable colloids/dispersions, as well as, characterizing the stability, size distribution, and other properties of the suspensions. I became acquainted with numerous techniques to disperse particles in a medium which included use of surfactants, high-shear mixers, and ultra-sonic dispersion probes. I also had the opportunity to characterize and formulate various inks which included dynamic light scattering, rheometry and viscometry.
