Retirement plans matter, and Industry service providers - everyone from financial advisors and CPAs to product providers, actuaries and third-party administrators - perform a 'noble purpose' for society. A particular encounter years ago cemented that thought in my mind. I was making rounds in the field with sales personnel and on one occasion we were meeting a particpant who was retiring from government service and wanted to understand options for using what she had built. While the representative was looking up her account infomration he shared that her balance at that moment was $82,256.15. Odd to remember a single number in a sea of numbers so clearly.Why do I remember it? Because her eyes immediately began tearing. After getting her a tissue, I asked if there was a problem I could help with. She smiled and said that even though she'd gotten quarterly statements since she'd joined the plan 15 years before....don't miss this....that she never realized what she'd been building until THAT MOMENT.Because of that plan, the plan she couldn't have or wouldn't have done for herself, her granddaughter would attend college and she was going to make it happen. No one in her family had.Here is what I believe: no matter what the political position of the month suggests - retirement plans absolutely make a difference in people's lives.
