Profile bio

About Lance Kramer

I am a Washington, DC-based filmmaker and co-founder of Meridian Hill Pictures with my brother Brandon Kramer. Over the past fifteen years, I have focused on making films that explore complex social themes from a deeply personal point of view. I develop original projects from the very inception through distribution and impact. I work collaboratively with protagonists and partners, and work tirelessly to create excellent art that has significant impact. I gravitate towards difficult stories that matter, and projects that seem the most impossible at the onset.I produced the independent feature films THE FIRST STEP (Tribeca, AFI DOCS, Amazon/Apple TV+); CITY OF TREES (Full Frame, PBS, Netflix); and the Webby Award-winning documentary series THE MESSY TRUTH. I have produced more than 30 short-form documentary pieces commissioned by clients including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, United States Institute for Peace and AARP Foundation. I also co-developed and facilitated the award-winning Youth Documentary Program at Sitar Arts Center.I was selected to the 2018 Sundance Creative Producers Summit, the 2017 Impact Partners Documentary Producers Fellowship and was named to the DOC NYC “40 Under 40” list in 2021. I was awarded four distinct Individual Arts Fellowships by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities between 2014-2022. In 2014, I received the DC Mayor’s Arts Award, the highest honor given to working artists in the city.Throughout my filmmaking career, I have always advocated for greater filmmaker sustainability, diversity, and efforts to expand and strengthen the independent filmmaking community. These have included two terms as Board Member of Docs in Progress, active membership in the Documentary Producers Alliance (DPA) since 2016, and creation of the "Producing Towards Equity" workshop series funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. I have published articles for Documentary Magazine, Huffington Post and Willamette Week, and wrote the children’s book ‘Great Ancient China Projects You Can Build Yourself’ published by Nomad Press.I'm a fourth-generation Washingtonian, born in DC and raised in Bethesda, MD by my loving parents Margi (an educator), Mark (a sculptor & architect) and a whole community of friends and family who had an indelible influence on me. I have a degree from Dartmouth College with a major in History and a minor in Film, where I had the good fortune to study abroad in Toulouse, France (University of Mirail) and Fez, Morocco (American Language Institute of Fez).
