Standing on the edge of a rickety halfpipe, helmet far too big for me, I looked up at Olympic skater Bryce Wettstein soaring above. My mouth agape and camera ready, I followed her incredible spins and flips. That moment ignited my passion for filmmaking—not just as an art form, but as a way to share powerful stories about real people.Shortly after, COVID-19 shifted my trajectory. When Southern California beaches reopened, my friend and I launched a YouTube channel documenting surfing with GoPros. Our channel caught the attention of GoPro, who sent us cameras to unbox. Meanwhile, my broadcasting teacher recognized my drive and gave me leadership over the middle school program during the pandemic. This pivotal moment led to a position as a sports live streamer in high school, where I learned to engage an audience of five thousand using innovative technology.My broadcasting teacher also shared invaluable insights on networking, helping me land a job filming a youth football league called Friday Night Lights. Through this, I learned the importance of quick turnarounds and social media management. Many of my visual works have won accolades in contests featuring thousands of student storytellers. The short documentaries I created captured the struggles and successes of individuals and programs, deepening my love for crafting narratives.In my freshman year, I received the Most Eager Freshman Award, a peer-voted honor. A significant highlight of my journey was an educational trip to Wales, where I wrote the curriculum and ran a camp for local youth, some with disabilities. Together, we started a program that won the 2023 Welsh Innovative Award and later traveled to the U.S. to win the 2024 News Magazine Award of Excellence, all under my guidance. This experience showed me the importance of networking and finding my place in the filmmaking industry.However, my journey hasn't been without challenges. A late-night message from my best friend, saying goodbye, and my grandma's struggle with dementia created deep emotional turmoil. These hardships initially left me feeling insignificant, but they ultimately fostered a profound empathy and perseverance within me. Filmmaking has become my outlet, inspiring me to help others share their stories.As I look ahead to college, I hope to enhance my skills and tell the stories of those who have faced even greater challenges. This is my dream.
