As an occupational safety professional I have worked in chemical manufacturing and construction since 2013. I am also a commissioned officer in the Kansas Air National Guard. Building relationships with employees and supervisors is the most critical step of becoming a trusted safety professional. Keeping an open mind to new and evolving safety practices, technologies, and equipment is crucial. A mentor told me when I began my career in field safety, “If the people don’t trust you they won’t bring their problems to you. If they don’t bring their safety concerns to you, then you can’t engineer those problems out. It’s that simple. Build those relationships, and never blow smoke when you don’t know.” I have made every attempt to mold my safety career by that basic philosophy.
