About Lane Keyes
lane.keyes@gmail.comI am a Georgia Tech degreed MS Mechanical Engineer experienced in aerospace engineering, stress and fluids analysis, research and product design, plus new pollution control concepts. I have offered success in providing economical solutions to technical problems, managing and developing various engineering projects within design, analysis, manufacturing, and testing.Previously, I worked as a Mechanical Engineer Specialist- Stress Analyst at Rolls-Royce Corporation in Indianapolis, IN. I was part of the Rotatives and Critical Parts group where I had the opportunity to work on the design, analysis, repair, and certification of the fan, compressor, and turbine rotative parts. My responsibilities involved performing analyses using FEA (ANSYS), hand calculations, and rig testing. Conceptual design, repair, and the auditing of junior analysts were included as secondary responsibilities of the job.Prior to Rolls-Royce, I spent 4 years working as a Mechanical Design Engineer at Velocys, a start-up company commercializing microchannel Gas to Liquids (GTL) technology. While in this position I played a variety of roles, primarily focusing on the design and structural analysis of Fischer-Tropsch reactors and Steam Methane Reformers. I also worked with manufacturing and experimental operations on fabrication and prototype testing, contributing a key role to the commercialization and scale-up of GTL reactors. I led post-operation autopsies of reactors by supporting the dismantling, specimen prep, and examination. I am proud to say that I have been part of successfully commercializing Velocys’ technology that will allow for cleaner, more efficient fuel refining.Specialties: advanced mechanical design, computational fluid dynamics, structural mechanics, plasticity, creep, and high temperature analysis using FEA, critical components lifing, stress concentration and low cycle fatigue analysis, crack growth, pressure vessel design, Keyence microscope
Listed skills include Engineering, R&D, Energy, Matlab, and 29 others.

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
Mechanical Design Engineer
Mechanical Engineer
• Engineer and develop air pollution control systems, from pre-contract concepts to performance testing guarantees. Lead engineering team to design, analyze, fabricate, and implement pollution control systems for heavy industry, e.g., power plants, steel mills, cement plants. Includes concept “kickoffs” with customer, design process with engineers/designers, to start-ups with emissions testing.• Calculate initial design through iterations of modeling and analysis for new pollution control concepts; includes a collaboration of performance, heat transfer, fluids, design, cost, and customer specifications. KEY ACHIEVEMENTS:• Introduced Solidworks CFD and FEA into the design process allowing for more competitive sizing and improved performance across all suites of products.• Established processes and protocols for a rapidly expanding engineering team, supporting a company initiative of increased efficiency to sustain 20% annual growth, both domestically and internationally.
Mechanical Engineer- Stress Analyst
• Analyze and declare lives for critical components within the Rotative Components group (shafts, fan, compressor, and turbine discs) through hand calculations, FEA, crack growth, and fatigue lifing. All work audited by senior analysts, documented through technical reports to authority, e.g., FAA, Air Force, Navy, and validated by rig tests.• Support initial design through iterations of modeling and analysis for new gas turbine concepts. Work includes a collaboration of performance, secondary flow, heat transfer, lifing, and design• Respond to technical variants of critical components through inspection of parts, analysis of problem, and mitigation of variantKEY ACHIEVEMENTS• Implemented a lifing method based on mission parameters that affect the stress and life of components through correlation with performance data, i.e., RPM, temp, pressure, dT/t, and flow. • Established a standard for technical variants by personally inspecting parts in laboratory. Allows the critical components lifing team to be involved in clearing a part variant from start to finish.• Continually improved the structural analysis procedure by incorporating additional theoretical calculations, lessons learned from work with other FEA software, and cross-industry experience.
Development Engineer
• Converted computational fluid dynamics results into structural simulations for the purpose of performing stress analyses on Fischer-Tropsch reactors and Steam Methane Reformers• Performed compression/operation analyses on processor designs to investigate the effects of gap size, wall thickness, and applied pressure on the diffusion bonding cycle, brazing cycle, and operational life cycle. This is done using ANSYS simulations which include stress, temperature, creep, and contact• Designed, modeled, and tested various devices/reactors for the Technology Development Center. All tests in lab used not only to certify reactors, but also to validate structural analyses• Led post-operation autopsies of reactors by supporting dismantling, specimen prep, and examination. Other activities included aiding experimental ops, pressure drop testing, reactor qualification, and working with vendors on fabrication and catalyst loading/unloading of reactorsKEY ACHIEVEMENTS• Valuable hands-on experience that will aid in future design decisions• Completed numerous stress/thermal analyses that have established micro-channel processor design standards• Expanded company knowledge of simulating reactor designs that has been accepted by multiple worldwide partners and industry professionals. Results are used to ASME certify the reactors• Exposed to a wide variety of work to be able to more fully understand the product and company
Mechanical Research And Design Engineer
• Designed, analyzed, manufactured, and tested an elastic membrane to be used for volume compensation in down-hole toolsKEY ACHIEVEMENTS• Validated and tested a theoretical design that was transitioned to a production engineer to replace current designs in old tools and to be implemented into new designs• Succeeded both academically and professionally in a foreign country
Mechanical Engineer Co-Op
• Airflow Research Lab- Obtained data from the testing of a large scale compressor and turbine for the purpose of verifying our temperature correction equation. This 3D data was then be used to create contour plots, velocity streamlines and other forms of flow visualization requested by sponsor• Heat Transfer & Fluid Systems Design- Performed a 3D thermal analysis on the turbine center frame flow path for the GEnx• Advanced Mechanical Design- Assisted several Lead Engineers with a variety of design tasks, primarily the identification of the cause of brush seal failure and the design of a working brush seal for the engine of the Boeing 787, the GEnx• Fan & Compressor Airfoils CoE (F&CA)- Presented weekly Design for Reliability reports to the senior staff of F&CA using engine fleet data drawn from Smart2000 and charts created from Minitab
