Chief Technical OfficerBorrego Water Exchange Jan 2004 - Dec 2008The Borrego Water Exchange created the first, durable system of water credits in the Borrego Valley to meet the water sustainability crisis of a sole source aquifer in decline. The system of water credits is in existence to this day. A Water Credit is reliable proof of the removal of a drawdown source of the Borrego Aquifer.The Exchange was the first independent water credit exchange in California when founded. Borrego Water Credits are the sole currency accepted by the Borrego Water District and the San Diego County to pay for a water permit and meter. As with carbon credits when utilized correctly, a water credit exchange will yield a net reduction of demand on the water resource.In founding the Water Credit Exchange, I had the pleasure of working with a broad set of stakeholders in farming, business and government. It resulted in a substantial transaction that removed over 50 acres of citrus production on an equitable basis. As with NegaWatts, the exchange demonstrates to this day how to create an economic reward for conservation.
