Background: Novel green solvents (ionic liquids) are playing increasingly vital roles in applications such as dissolution, biomass, lubricants, and drug delivery. It is therefore critical to obtain a better understanding of the surfactant behavior in ILs.  Revealed the rich surface activity when combining surfactants with ionic liquids (ILs) by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and developed a new and robust method for surface analysis  Discovered that the solubility and aggregation behavior of surfactants are strongly dependent on temperature and the IL chemistry; Provided the theoretical prediction of how to tune the interfacial and aggregation behavior in a rational manner Demonstrated the strong charge screening between surfactant molecules, leading to ideal behavior of mixed surfactants in IL. It could significantly broaden the application of ILs as a novel solvent for reactions and biomaterials storage Synthesized non-counterion surfactants and characterized the size of micelles in sub-nanometer scale by diffusion NMR Collaborated with a simulation group on the surface composition and bulk aggregates diffusion of surfactants in ILs
