About Jamie Lang

My career as an finance and operations management executive has allowed me to exercise the skills I enjoy most: identifying the key levers of a business, formulating a strategy around those levers, leading a team to execute on the strategy, and applying technology and efficient business processes along the way. I thrive in competitive, rapidly changing environments that require high level problem solving skills and brokering deals between often opposing parties. I also enjoy forging mutually beneficial partnerships with vendors and customers. My business expertise focuses on finance, accounting, and operations and is complimented by my science and technology background, which allows me to quickly understand and analyze new technologies, apply them to fields where technology is lacking, or translate the merits of those technologies to my more business minded colleagues or customers. I have a proven track record that demonstrates my drive to pursue continuous process, personnel, and business process enhancements that, coupled with business strategy formulation, result in successful endeavors.

  • Energesco Solutions Llc
    Chief Financial Officer
Energesco Solutions Llc Dec 2010 - Present
    Alexandria, Virginia, Us
Energesco is an energy services company focused on energy efficiency and renewable power generation projects. Our niche is providing services to small and medium sized commercial clients – a highly underserved market. My job is to provide a turn-key approach, from initial analysis to design to implementation to financing and any follow on monitoring that might be needed. One of the facets I enjoy most is explaining technology to customers who are less technically savvy and more focused on how energy efficiency projects can improve their bottom line. I also provide project level financial models, internal accounting and financial reporting, and develop business strategies for the business. I am responsible for all accounting, human resource, and IT functions as well.Key Achievements: - Grew business from scratch to servicing national corporate restaurant and real estate clients on energy services projects.- Obtained approval for utility company energy efficiency reimbursement projects in several states.
  • U.S. Restaurant Properties
    Chief Financial Officer/Chief Operating Officer
    U.S. Restaurant Properties Sep 2010 - Dec 2013
USRP was a restart of a formerly publicly traded real estate investment trust. After the financial crisis our founder felt the market was right to re-enter and tapped me to head up finance and operations for the firm, which was focused on the acquisition and asset management of triple net leased restaurant and curb-side properties. I assembled and directed a high performing team and identified new technology and process improvements to streamline the purchase and management of our portfolio properties. I was also responsible for crafting the company's accounting policies and procedures, including budgeting, forecasting, and favorable tax treatment (for instance I developed cost segregation studies to establish favorable depreciation schedules for asset components). One of the more challenging aspects of my work was the mediation of lease discussions between a large, publicly traded landlord we represented with our lessees who were various national restaurant chains and franchisees. During my tenure I cultivated partnerships with vendors, debt and equity investors, and publicly traded REITs. I was responsible for team supervision, business strategy formulation and execution, and budget and financial performance oversight.Key Achievements:- Achieved $130M in acquisitions and $120M under management in three years.- Implemented proprietary database with market intelligence, acquisitions, and asset management interfaces.
  • U.S. Food Trucks
    Director/Chief Operating Officer
    U.S. Food Trucks Sep 2010 - Dec 2013
USFT was a natural extension to our U.S. Restaurant Properties portfolio. We founded the company after recognizing the explosive growth in the gourmet food truck industry. In most major metropolitan areas the city health department requires the use of a food truck commissary for all operators. After performing a market analysis it was clear the available commissaries in Dallas were focused on “lunch” trucks, not the growing gourmet truck market. We purchased a well located warehouse and converted it into a facility designed for the needs of the gourmet operator, including dry and cold storage and a large community kitchen space for food preparation. I also initiated a truck leasing program to provide a turn-key package for new operators to enter the business. Getting to know the food service entrepreneurs who run the trucks and guiding them through their first months of business was both highly rewarding and challenging. As with USRP I was responsible for team supervision, business strategy formulation and execution, and budget and financial performance oversight.Key Achievements: - Established turnkey process allowing gourmet food truck customers to lease a truck, park, store food, use a shared community kitchen, and book events within the same facility. - Grew business from zero to 25+ parked trucks at new commissary facility (first facility permitted in Dallas in over 40 years).- Managed design build projects for special purpose facility build out that included construction of specialty food truck fixtures and interior catering kitchen space for lessees.
  • I3 Funds/ Slkw Investments
    Partner And Chief Operating Officer
    I3 Funds/ Slkw Investments Sep 2006 - Dec 2011
i3 Funds allowed me to stretch my analytical muscles and refine my intuitive acumen as a trader and analyst. Having started the fund at the beginning of the financial crisis there were plenty of challenges, both in executing the fund strategy and discussing strategies and results with nervous investors. I created and applied proprietary algorithms to data aggregated from Bloomberg for stock selection and followed that with a streamlined investment committee process to more effectively consider market and macro factors. I was also responsible for accounting, budgeting, forecasting, human resources, and IT for the firm. The result was a successful niche fund based on the trading of income bearing securities.Key Achievements:- Grew business from $1M to $7M in assets under management.- Maintained an average annual return in the mid-teens.
  • Energy Literacy Advocates
Board Member And Former Executive Director
Energy Literacy Advocates Aug 2005 - Oct 2010
I co-founded Energy Literacy Advocates to focus on a non-partisan approach to educating Americans about our lack of a national energy policy and plan. Our solutions focused on the nexus of the economy, environment, and our national security. One of the most rewarding aspects of my tenure was the assembling, and my interaction, with our high powered boards of directors and advisors. During my tenure I was responsible for building the organization from the ground up, including strategy formulation, marketing, board relations, supervision of the team, and all accounting (including 501(c)3 tax reporting and compliance) and operational functions.Key Achievements:- Managed the expectations of key stakeholders, including board members, donors, and groups with partisan energy views.- Grew list of supporters from zero to 350 in one year.
  • Breakthrough Development Company
    Senior Associate
Breakthrough Development Company May 2002 - Aug 2005
Breakthrough was founded to provide operational and business development support services to life science companies. During my tenure with BDC I developed and executed business plans and performed key market research for biotech start-up companies, often pitching their early stage pharmaceuticals to established biotech and pharmaceutical companies. Preparing financial models and pro-formas for the business plan was a particular strength. I was also tasked with conducting local and international market and competitive assessments as well as due diligence. Key Achievement: - Launched several successful start-up ventures including a small batch drug manufacturing facility and a diagnostic company partially funded by the US Army.
  • P.G. Systems
    Chief Business Officer And Co-Founder
    P.G. Systems Jan 2003 - Jun 2004
I co-founded P.G. Systems while attending master’s school at the University of Wisconsin. We initially developed our business plan to participate in a competition, but while performing market research found a high level of interest in our potential product. Upon graduation we pitched the business plan to stakeholders, partners, and potential investors while successfully guiding the company through the start-up phase to product prototyping with a limited budget. I assembled financial forecasts, performed market analyses, and crafted the strategic plan and business model as part of my duties. I also co-managed a team of engineers. I learned more about business and operations in that single year than any other ten combined. Unfortunately after the prototype was complete the product was priced at about twice what the market could bear and we made the painful decision to abandon operations.Key Achievements:- Started and lead my first professional company.- Negotiated key patent license and a partnership deal with an Israel based technology company.
  • Onit Consulting
    Technical Services Manager
    Onit Consulting Aug 1998 - Apr 2002
OnIT Consulting focused on providing a range of technology based solutions to business clients. I started with the company as a scheduler for the engineering unit, but was rapidly promoted to the Technical Services Manager after streamlining the time and billing process to better align and communicate OnIT’s engineering deliverables with customer expectations. I was also tasked with facilitating training programs, professional development initiatives, and administering weekly meetings in support of the continuing education of my engineers. One of the aspects of my position I enjoyed most was interacting with clients and providing superior customer service. Often information technology was foreign and scary for them, and I had to act as a translator to explain how upgrades would enhance their bottom line performance or why a service call to proactively fix an issue was needed. Integrity and honesty were key to developing lasting relationships and repeat business with our clients, as there were many competitors available to provide similar services. When I left the company to attend business school we had a solid client base and were the largest Citrix software reseller in Wisconsin. Key Achievements:- Implemented engineering time and billing reporting system, periodic financial reports, and engineering performance metrics.- Maintained over 90% utilization rates through time and billing reporting system, driving unit profitability.- Company grew from 12 to 50 employees and from $1M to $4m in annual sales in three years.- Managed projects from design to installation with a focus on exceptional customer service.
