MTR classroom sessions involve instruction and practice with map reading, compass use, geographical grid systems, GPS operation, appropriate clothing and nutrition, medical and environmental hazards, winter travel, SAR organization, knots, ropes & pulleys, etc.Field exercises involve 15-20 students in teams of 2-4 traveling and camping in the winter mountain environment. Students apply the skills learned in the classroom. Activities include Search and Rescue (SAR) scenarios (non-technical); emergency shelters; off-trail navigation with map, compass, and GPS; low-angle rigging; snow anchors; other related backcountry skills.OTH is an annual skill refresher requirement for all 30-40 patrollers covering similar skills.
