I provide strategic guidance on legal, political, and legislative matters to a wide range of clients and business interests, including manufacturing, governmental entities, educational institutions, and municipalities. I frequently represent clients in economic development and legal matters concerning commercial litigation, construction and lien disputes, professional and product liability, government relations and investigations, and crisis management and counseling. I am also a Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 31 Listed Civil Mediator. Representative matters:+Successfully contested a mayoral election in a town in Tennessee, voiding the mayoral race.+Successfully contested an election to overturn a referendum defeat and affirmatively declare passage of the referendum.+Served as lead counsel in historic election contest and vote of the Tennessee State Senate to void the election of a member.+Negotiated a successful, seven-figure confidential settlement of cyber fraud insurance coverage and a bad faith claim.+Represented a large regional bank in multiple ongoing insurance recovery litigation matters involving bankers' professional liability and Directors and Officers Liability Insurance coverages.+Successfully represented and participated in negotiation of an eight-figure confidential settlement of insurance coverage and bad faith claims against multiple carriers for failure to defend and provide coverage for manufacture of defective medical devices.+Successfully prosecuted and negotiated a $1.8 million settlement of a construction site injury claim utilizing a little-used exception allowing pursuit of a separate tort claim against a fellow subcontractor despite vigorous denial and defense by the subcontractor's insurance company.

Tennessee State Capitol

I served as Deputy to the Governor and Chief Counsel. As Deputy to the Governor, I assisted the Governor in his day-to-day duties and acted as a liaison between the Governor’s office, the legislature, and the various departments and agencies in state government. As Chief Counsel, I was responsible for coordinating the legal affairs of the Executive Branch and advising the Governor on legal, political, legislative, and other matters. I assisted in the development, drafting, and implementation of legislation, including legislation to enact incentive packages for a multinational automobile manufacturer, and oversaw the Governor’s relations with the Judiciary, the Attorney General and Reporter, and District Attorneys General. I also spearheaded the Governor’s consideration of judicial appointments and requests for executive clemency.

Law practice concentrated in the areas of business and commercial litigation, personal injury, automobile accidents, medical and legal malpractice, products liability, wrongful death, construction litigation and lien disputes, and government relations/public policy. I help people navigate and manage legal disputes while balancing cost relative to a desired outcome. This includes not just the actual litigation of lawsuits but also the evaluation and management of expectations, thinking creatively about options and potential outcomes, and then shaping a strategy to get there.
