Well, how did I get here?The story of my career has a remarkable parallel in the story of my life. As I finished up my History degree, I started embarking on journeys overseas. I was wondering, as I wandered, where I would land but knew somehow that it would be somewhere other than the suburb where I grew up. Until it wasn’t. I even took a job in that same suburb because it was easier while raising my family, being so close.Life has changed, but I learned a lot of things during those years working in marketing: • writing of all kinds: internal communications, web, collateral, press releases• editing• implementing strategic direction through well-designed communication plans• measuring results of initiatives• organizing and analyzing data• building relationships with internal clients and external vendors• contract negotiation• building presentations that tell meaningful stories• developing strategic communications plans using various tactics• managing budgets and inventory• leading projects from beginning to end• keeping projects on-time and on-budget• training and creating training plans• process development and process improvementAs I reflect on all I have accomplished working in a field I hadn’t even considered when I was in college, I realized I want to be where I started – writing, like I did in my history classes – gathering information, organizing ideas, communicating processes and collaborating with others.
