Temporary Field Technician
Ecological data collection for various taxa and abiotic factors
Teaching Assistantship
I had a teaching assistantship for an undergraduate lab called Fundamentals of Ecology. As the TA for this lab, I taught in both classroom and field settings, created testing material and some learning material, and graded assignments, quizzes, and projects.
Bird Conservation Technician
On a team with two other technicians, I conducted weekly shorebird and wetland bird surveys and entered the data into eBird. When I wasn't surveying, I was participating in habitat restoration and trail maintenance across multiple tracts of HAS property. Habitat restoration included invasive plant removal using chainsaw, loppers, and herbicide, as well as feral hog trapping. I also participated in public outreach by assisting in fundraising events, volunteer work days, beach clean ups, and other events.
Citizen Science Intern
The primary activity I did during this internship was assist in weekly bird banding events. These were open to the public, and I would help set up and take down mist nets, extract birds from the nets, band the birds, record data, and educate the public on the importance of bird banding. I also participated in other scientific studies, such as salamander plot monitoring, a dendrology study, a land snail survey, and my own personal study which summarized long-term bird banding data. Lastly, I co-led a 4-day backcountry canoe trip for teenagers, as well as a week-long “Smokies Science Investigation” camp for teenagers.
Teaching Assistant
As an undergraduate teaching assistant for Ecology and Evolution, Plant Biology, and Comparative Physiology, I assisted in the lab portion of these courses. I set up and took down labs each week, graded lab assignments, and provided study sessions for the students.
Trail Maintenance Crew Member
During this seasonal summer job, I worked with a small team to preform basic trail maintenance across all park trails. Each morning, we would tend to the organic garden before spending the rest of the day clearing the trails with a fire rake and mattock, as well as building signs and implementing retaining logs. I also participated in outreach by educating the public through the park's nature programs.
