I'm a draftsman at heart. From the first time I saw a cross-section of a valve and was able to understand how it functioned, the idea that you could communicate something’s essence by means of drawings always spoke to me; challenged me. In the beginning, I learned the old-fashioned way, with T-square and triangles. It was almost an art back then. Then computers came along, and a keyboard and mouse replaced my drawing board as I learned CAD. The CAD programs began having built-in scripting languages and programming interfaces. I caught the programming bug, so I learned how to create AutoCAD drawings with VBA. Then 3D solid-modeling replaced 2D drawings. Soon, my programs were telling Autodesk Inventor how to constrain parts into assemblies, and how to ask for input from a user. Or, more challenging, how not to. VBA gave way to .Net and the programs became distributed tools that others could use as well. Mundane tasks that took huge chunks of time were replaced by addins that took only seconds with the click of a button. With Inventor iLogic, revisions across several related assemblies could be accomplished by merely changing the value of a parameter, then clicking an update button. My latest endeavor has been with the AcCoreConsole, a "headless" version of AutoCAD. With it, automated processes don’t have to wait the 20-30 seconds it takes just for AutoCAD to launch, but instead, can get custom files created in a matter of seconds.
