Goldman Sachs recruited me from SBC Communications (now AT&T) in St. Louis to join their Investment Bank in NYC. Pension funds were increasingly important to large Goldman Sachs clients, from a take-over defense strategy to reporting earning. My first three years at Goldman were as a VP in their investment banking division. In mid 1989, Goldman Sachs made the decision to start an asset management business, known as Goldman Sachs Asset Management (GSAM). Lee Cooperman was selected as GSAM's CEO and Chairman, and he asked me to join him in building the new business. I was one of the original 5-7 people to start GSAM.
